the damage, the deaths, and the injuries including a young boy swept into his storm drain. calls for justice. new police body cam video shows a sheriff's deputy's fatal encounter with a u.s. airman shot in his own home. first, combative cross-examination. donald trump's lawyers go on the attack against stormy daniels questioning her credibility about her alleged sexual encounter with the former president. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. former president donald trump's manhattan criminal trial gets back under way soon with continued testimony from a former white house staffer. yesterday star prosecution witness stormy daniels pushed back on trump's lawyers' attempt to paint her as motivated by money. cbs' jarred hill is joining us from new york with more as all we heard. good morning. >> reporter: hey, anne-marie. so prosecutors here are arguing that the salacious details of stormy daniels' testimony helped

to explain what then-candidate trump wanted to hide before the 2016 election. the defense, though, says this is about bookkeeping regarding the money that michael cohen paid her. and daniels testified she didn't know if or how trump was directly involved. former president trump frustrated leaving court thursday, is due back today. >> we are so innocent. there's never been anything like it. >> reporter: his onetime white house aide madeleine westherout returning to the stand. she testified trump was fedex'd checks to sign while in office. her testimony follows a second day of tense cross-examination of adult film star stormy daniels. she was paid $130,000 by trump's former fixer, michael cohen, according to the prosecution, the money meant to keep her quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with trump before the 2016 election. trump denies the encounter and pleaded not guilty to charges that he falsified business records to hide his reimbursement of the payment to cohen.

trump's lawyer, susan necheles, aggressively challenged daniels' credibility. at one point asking, "you wanted to make more money, right?" daniels said, "no, that's why i did "60 minutes" for free." >> you could have gotten paid a lot to go public. >> without a doubt. i know for a fact. >> reporter: when necheles asked if subcommittee made up the sexual encounter, she responded if it was untrue i would have written it a lot better. >> the only thing that stormy daniels is relevant for is to say that she had a story and got paid $130,000 for that story. >> reporter: trump again lashed out at judge juan merchan yesterday after he denied trump's lawyer's request to amend the gag order. >> he's a corrupt judge, and he's totally conflicted. >> reporter: their second motion for a mistrial also denied. also yesterday the judge told news photographers that they were no longer allowed to take pictures inside of the courtroom. this comes after one of the photographers apparently violated the rules of the court. this is according to some of the reports from those inside.

>> all right, jarred hill in new york. thank you. more severe weather after storms battered the south and midwest killing four and injuring many others. powerful thunderstorms brought tornadoes and high winds to the carolinas where trees were uprooted, power lines downed, and homes torn apart. tens of thousands of customers were left without power. video shows a funnel cloud accompanied by lightning strikes happening at 2:00 a.m. thursday in south carolina. parts of central texas were pelted with hail ranging in size from a quarter to a baseball yesterday. the national weather service issuing several tornado watches and warnings for the area, as well. and in tennessee, prayer vigils for a 10-year-old boy who was seriously injured when he got caught in a storm drain while playing. the child was swept under the streets and eventually emerged in a drainage ditch. looking at the weather radar today, rounds of thunderstorms will bring a damaging wind

threat to florida, georgia, and south carolina, continuing through this afternoon. the family of a decorated service member is demanding answers after a sheriff's deputy shot and killed the 23-year-old inside his own home. under mounting pressure, the florida sheriff's office leased -- released body camera video showing the deadly encounter with u.s. air force airman roger fortson as he opened his door. and a warning to you, some of the images are disturbing. cbs' mark strassmann reports. >> reporter: newly released body cam video shows an okaloosa count deputy arriving at the home of senior airman roger fortson's apartment door, responding to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance. the video is partially blurred. the deputy appears to step to the side and knock. seconds later, fortson opens the door holding a handgun at his side that was legally owned according to his family. the deputy orders him to step back and then fires. [ gunfire ]

okaloosa county sheriff eric aden says his department released the video to be transparent. >> i want to assure you that we are not hiding, covering up, or taking action that would result in a rush to judgment of mr. fortson or our deputy. >> reporter: fortson's mother says her son was facetiming with his girlfriend during the shooting. a portion of that facetime video which appears to be after the shooting was released by the family's attorney. >> stay with us. >> reporter: law enforcement can be heard talking about fortson's injuries. the subtitles were added by cbs news. >> six gunshot wounds. >> they just say, oh, yeah, he shot up. he shot up. my baby was shot up. >> reporter: fortson's family claims the deputy had no reason to go to his apartment. the sheriff says his deputy went to the apartment he was directed to. in other words, contradictory accounts. lawyer ben crump represents the family.

>> roger was the best of us. he was the best america had to offer, and they stole his life. the very people who were supposed to protect and serve him took him away from mika and their family. >> reporter: the deputy who pulled the trigger has been placed on administrative leave while state investigators look into the shooting. mark strassmann, cbs news, smyrna, georgia. strong reaction from israel fighting back against president biden's warning that he would withhold arms if israeli forces invade rafah. in a new interview with dr. phil, prime minister benjamin netanyahu said that he hopes to overcome the disagreements with biden, but in the end he says israel will do what israel must do to protect their country. a cease-fire for hostage talks have stalled again as anger flares over israel's incursion of rafah. cbs' ramy inocencio reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: with israel's military pushing closer to the

city of rafah, prime minister benjamin netanyahu is pushing back angrily against president biden. [ speaking in a global language ] "if we have to stand alone, we will stand alone," he said. his reply to biden's blunt warning wednesday to not launch a major strike. >> it's just wrong. >> reporter: the president said he wants to avoid mass casualties and paused a shipment of 3,500 bombs last week. refusing to back down, israel's military spokesman said they have the necessary ammunition for the rafah operation. a far-right minister posted on social "hamas loves biden," and another lawmaker said biden not only jeopardizes israel but the entire free world. rafah is believed to be hamas' last bastion with four battalions, but for nearly 1.5 million people, 600,000 of them children, it's their last refuge from this war and still getting struck. some in israel want to keep advancing, says former deputy national security adviser chuck

with non-habit forming zzzquil. ♪ ♪ frightening video out of senegal. a boeing jet skidded off the runway at an airport, then caught fire late wednesday. the plane had been trying to take off. 85 people were on board. at least ten of them were hurt. panicked passengers were heard screaming as they escaped the plane. some had to use the emergency chutes. no word on what caused the mishap. a shark attack survivor speaks out, and a deadly avalanche. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the salt lake tribune" reports two skiers died in an avalanche in little cottonwood canyon. it happened yesterday in the mountains outside of salt lake city. a rescue team went to the area mid morning after the avalanche was reported. one of the skiers who was able to dig himself out was rescued and taken to the hospital. rescue crews confirmed two other men died. man was bitten after falling into shark-infested waters. marlin wakeman said he was working on a boat in the bahamas last month when he slipped and fell into the water where multiple sharks were swimming around. the 24-year-old was able to pull himself back out of the boat but not before a shark bit his leg and another bit his shoulder. >> i was holding onto the board and he grabbed me, pulled my head under water. and then let go of me. that's when i was able to get back to the surface, get my hand back on the boat. that's when the other one tried to bite me. >> wakeman said his boat captain tied a turn kept on his leg once he got out of the water. he had to undergo surgery. and the "detroit free press" reports a woman living in a sign of a michigan grocery store for almost a year. she was living inside the family fare market sign where she had set up flooring, a mini desk, a

aurora could be seen as far south as alabama and up to northern california. mother's day spending reaches new heights, and target making changes after last year's pride month backlash. here's courtney kealy with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: the markets ended thursday in the green with the s&p near record levels. the dow jumped 331 points. the nasdaq rose 43, and the s&p climbed 26 points. target is planning to scale back its lgbtq-plus-themed merchandise during pride month in june. the retailer says it will still sell the complete pride collection on line, but only select stores will have the items in stock, and those stores are based on customer feedback. last year target faced backlash and was forced to remove some of its pride items which it blamed on a drop in sales. tiktok is starting to automatically label content created with artificial intelligence when uploaded from certain platforms. the ai-generated material will
