5:05 pm
those colors we had in the sky, this is that upper energy that hits the earth's upper atmosphere, reacting with nitrogen and oxygen molecules. and depending on where that is in the atmosphere, you do get those different colors. usually when an aurora is set up far away, you see the red on the horizon. but with the southern extent of the aurora down and even southern california, you did get to see all those colors last night. the red, the blue, the green and the pink. so how do we set up tonight? last night it was a g5 level storm. right now the official forecast from the space weather prediction center is a g4, which means as far south as northern california is a possibility again tonight the levels have dropped off to start, but after midnight tonight, there will be that window of opportunity where we just might see more of those northern lights not so far to the north, but the weather might get in the way. as you see, we got some low clouds spreading across the bay, leading to some cooling temperatures taking the edge off that summer-like heat we've been experiencing inland over the last couple of days. we'll talk more about this cooling trend heading our way to

in san francisco. that's a look at almost summerlike microclimates to get the sea breeze picking up low clouds starting to scoot in across the bay at 65 degrees, and that wind out of the west at 20mph. we still have mid 80 s upper 80s out towards fairfield. danville 86 degrees mid 80s into morgan hill. but notice the temperature change signs of cooling out there that marine air is going to deepen up a little bit more as we head towards tomorrow morning. so it's starting now. west of san francisco is going to move across the bay approaching midnight. so for your aurora viewing tips tonight, hills east of san jose, diablo range and the interior north bay look pretty good because watch what happens. by the time we get towards tomorrow morning, we're going to wake up to low clouds, even towards those inland east bay valleys for the morning and then back into the sunshine for the afternoon. but the extent of the low clouds for the morning, hinting at a slight cool down on the way. we begin with 50s to start off for tomorrow morning, and then by lunchtime numbers in the 70s to low 80s. but high temperatures tomorrow start a little bit of a downward trend.
5:18 pm
maintaining 60s around san francisco. low 70s around oakland. one more day of low 80s in san jose. then as we move forward to monday, those numbers start to come down a little bit. so inland locations briefly drop in the low 80s and the temperatures are going to rebound again as we head towards tuesday. and again now by wednesday, solano county could be close to those upper 80s to near 90 degrees, low to mid 80s around san jose, 60s and 70s again around san francisco and oakland. that's going to be high pressure wednesday and thursday. it's that midweek warm up now. we've seen three weeks in a row with some coastal low clouds heading towards next weekend. right now doesn't look like much . just have to watch for some isolated sierra thunderstorms for the afternoon. but bay area wise, we're kind of in a summer pattern now with inland temperatures in the 70s and 80s. san francisco looking at more low clouds. cloudy start. not the best place for trying to catch some of aurora viewing tonight around the inner bay or coast. inland areas will be pretty good though, as you see. just a very subtle cool down there monday into tuesday,
