We have been debugging a distributed caching system called freecache. We are looking for a few folks to help speed test the first vestiges of it. It is enabled on the movies collections, and we have pre-cached one Llama show:

specifically here is a link to the show on an internet2 host:

if some folks, especially internet2 users, could speed test the latter link, and post responses here, that would be great. Also, pls give feedback on what you think of the tar version of the show.

i'm not an internet2 user (i don't think i am. i'm not on a internet2 university's server connection) but i clicked the top link and got it downloading at ~ 250! good times! so this brings me to my next question: is this applicable only to shows on internet2? and wasn't the deal with internet2 that it was only for etree04.archive.org? now it has included a show on etree06? whatever it is, it is another great step by the admins to help get the shows out to the people at faster speeds. thanks for the hard work!

Brewster can you fill you in more, but in the meantime check out http://www.freecache.org - the basic idea is that we can mirror popular shows, movies, and other large files (on the fly!) as people download them. It works like a traditional cache in some ways (e.g. when you use your computer, the files you use most frequently are typically kept in memory in addition to your hard drive, to make access faster) - this idea is similar.

I got the full speed of our dsl: 80KB/sec.

Freecache is a file caching system. We will be looking for more people to run this on their systems if they have a Big Pipe (larger than dsl/cable/T1). For now we are just testing with a few nodes to get the parameters set right.

I just used the i2 link. My speed peaked at 1500KB, I have never seen sustained speeds above 600KB on this pipe.

I like the tar ball idea, one link nice and easy.

BTW the total time to download was 7.5 minutes, not bad for a 700MB file :)

i noticed that the file was .shnf.tar what is the '.tar' extention? i couldn't find it in the FAQ, so pardon the ignorance...

.tar is an extension meaning a "tar file". This is an ancient unix mechanism for bundling files together into one file (like zip but without the compression). We believe that it is handled on most OS's (winzip, stuffit, and tar), but would be interested if it is not.
