BUT:-
"Lazy Lightnin'" -> "Supplication" was not what the Dead was(sic) all about. Should have remained as Bob Weir solo material / fodder. The beginning of the end - IMHO. Can't see Pigpen singing along with that shit.
Yeah, his E'72 contributions and either side (from year dot to '74-'75-'76 were massive. I for one love all the cowboy songs, "Me and Bobby", LLR and all the 'Ace' stuff and (when he gave up writing songs and stole them instead) even all the later Dylan and walking blues covers. I ain't no Bobby-knocker, but that Lazy-Lightnin'-Supplication lounge lizard stuff ("Oooh, oooh, oooh") stuff is the pits.
Give me the Bobby that 'picked up a bottle, smashed him in the jaw' any day .............. even with the yellow dog!

Got it ............ it's covered in dust somewhere.
Kinda (just a little) liked "Big Iron" a bit and that Hoddinott (spelling from memory) could play the guitar, but ..... ain't listened to it for years. Listen to E'72 (the big box) with LLR quite a lot. Thank heavens Lazy f8ckin' Lightnin' -> Supplication ain't in that collection.
Still, if that's what floats your boat.

Oh yeah, they kicked butt; best Bob effort by far in my view...the lead kid REALLY shined on Battle of New Orleans. Great, great stuff. It was the essence of the OMSN meets M&MU approach for Bob...IE, the band was the vehicle for really exploring that little garage rock band genre, prior to the overly slick, Heaven Help the Pathetic Sell Out or whatever the point was of the late 70s with Bob and his song writing/song selection, both in the DEAD and solo.

I really liked Kingfish via the official releases and a couple of shows I picked up - it's one of my regrets that they never brought the act to a place where I could see them for myself. Always had the impression though that it was basically Torbert and Kelly's band and Weir was just making up the numbers.
Robbie Hoddinott had a damn fine guitar sound - I have an idea that he fell on drug-related hard times in later years. Do you happen to know?

Been a short Summer for me as I was in Sri Lanka and the Maldives until mid-July. But glad it's just about over!

I think the worst there is to say about Bob is that his contributions over the years are uneven. There is some great stuff and some cringe inducing stuff. It continues that way to this day. There's some songs he sings that he just CAN'T SING and I can't understand why someone doesn't tell him. But I continue to think he's a slightly misunderstood genius.

any day - LLR is a song from the heart (and it sits well on 'Ace').
LL->Supp is Bob trying to turn the Dead into possible candidates for "Saturday Night Fever #3" - up there (more like down there) with "I Want To Live In America" (or whatever it was called) by Bob and the Midnites ..... now that would sit well with LL->Supp.
I dunno, maybe, just maybe, it depends on when you got on the bus. If it was around Skull & Roses / E'72, then 'LLR' (and other Ace material) blended in well. LL->Supp from any angle, to me at least, sticks out like a sore thumb - the antithesis of 'Dark Star'->'St,Stephen'->'The Eleven', etc., even LLR.
But, if you joined round about when LL->Supp was introduced into the set-lists, and you thought that was their typical fare ......... OH MY GOODNESS, poor you.
OK, like anything, it gives them the opportunity to stretch out (against a disco theme - but, heh, they started off as a dance band, well, after being a jug band) but that's about it.
Maybe Pigpen wouldn't have liked LLR either (despite the references to him and Janis) but I can't see him doing his shit to LL-Supp and keeping a straight face.
Oh my goodness, call the guys in the white coats.

I remember back in 1981 when Dead Set and Reckoning came out. That was how I got into the Grateful Dead.
Remember - this is long before utube, etc... .
So having not seen them before, whenever I listened to the album or bootlegs - it seemed that "Bob's" tunes were sang much more often (Minglewood, Stranger, Mexicali>My Uncle, Around>Sugar Magnolia)than "Jerry's". So since I knew Jerry was the unspoken leader I assumed he was singing Bob's songs and vice-versa!! Just a little side note.
Anyway (that was a long way into this, I know) I used to hear some of my friends say that Weir "tried too hard", "got annoying jolting his head back on every syllable", "had foolish comments", you get the idea.
I never had a problem with Weir. I thought he balanced out Jer really well. He did at times try to be " a rock star". But I thought his energy was pretty good most nights.
Weir's whole handling of downloads a few years back...I wouldn't say I dislike or hate him. But it left me a little distant from vault releases, etc.

Ha--I have to admit, this instantly made me think of my youth when I was trying to figure this out (late 60s) with NOTHING whatsoever to help...can't recall how I did, but somehow got it sorted.
It's funny how that works when you aren't seeing a band for whatever reason.
