Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Query: John Mayall [non-JG]

A very underrated period of John Mayall's career is the late 71/72 band with Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Freddie Solomon on guitar, Keef Hartley on drums, Victor Gaskin on bass and Fred Clark on tenor sax. That lineup was responsible for a weak album called Jazz/Blues Fusion. However, there are live tapes around on Sugarmegs (and no doubt elsewhere) that are really terrific.

I would recommend Oct 22 '71 Hollywood (aud) and April 12 '72 Gothenburg, Sweden (FM). Mayall has great players and lets them play, and there are only barely songs, just some wide open jamming.

For commercial releases, check out 1969's Bare Wires and Blues From Laurel Canyon, both with Mick Taylor on guitar but very different.
