Mostly speculative Deniro, i have no idea what was going on in Hunters mind in the early 70s other than his lyrical musings, but art does influence art, and artist's draw from everything in the universe.
I worked at the local book/record store in high school and Deliverance definitely increased the genre awareness of Bluegrass music, nowhere near the big seller that Neil Diamonds Jonathan Livingston Seagull was to the middle-age female clientele, however. I was eager to learn the guitar parts to the films theme song.
Garcias last performance with the New Riders was August of 1971 and he just might have caught the banjo bug again from Deliverance. Most every American film enthusiast saw both Godfather & Deliverance in 1972. Godfather opening weekend was March 24th and He's Gone first live performance was April 17th. So the timelines could probably work.
Old & In The Way first performed live March 2nd, 1973. Wake of the Flood was definitely a push into the world of Vassar Clements in 1973 for many of us.
Being a film enthusiast, on several occasions, while listening to the various actors dialogue have been reminded of songs that contained those lines as lyrics.
Oh and BTW, here's the evidence you’ve been searching for, i responded to Skobuds handle in the thread, that must be absolute proof beyond a reasonable doubt for any sane person, yes!

Oh, I know. I am honestly just curious if there is any basis to his statements about Jerry and Hunter being so influenced by films. Idk why Jerry's ass is red, but he looks pretty sad about it.

Sadly, there are some cuts in The Eleven, and Death Don't Have No Mercy that really disrupt the show, but otherwise, this has some of the most top-notch playing of early '69.

Hah. In my current state of mind, it sounds like a great idea. The Red Hot Chili Peppers used to rock out with their cocks out, but your band can be the first to expose just the buttocks! I'm certain this would draw a crowd (maybe not the crowd you're looking for though). You all need to paint your asses red, and then get pants that have a butt flap. Wait till the encore, then turn your backs towards the audience and unveil a row of lustrous red cheeks. You'll need a revolving drum kit so you can play with your ass to the crowd :-) I can just imagine ya grabbing the mic, bending over, and shouting “The sun will shine in my backdoor someday!”
Oh, and yes 2/15/69 is outstanding. Gets somewhat lost amidst of sea of great '69 shows. Jerry's fingers had some extra magic in them that night. I'd love to see an official release of a show like that, which doesn't already have a pristine sbd in circulation. There's no incentive for me, and many others, to purchase shows which I already have near-perfect sounding copies of.

Sure. Jerry, Vassar, Peter Rowan.. they didn't know a thing about bluegrass until Deliverance. That's why none of them played bluegrass until that film came out. And you thought He's Gone was about Lenny Hart, right? WRONG! Rob has pulled back the veil again, revealing a previously-unknown line from the Godfather as Hunter's source material. Even though you won't find it in any circulating scripts of that movie, you can rest assured -- as sure as he was taping shows while he was in grade school -- that his word is gold. Take it to the bank. But I'm sure those tapes will emerge someday. Right Rob?
