Re: but there was also the 70s ... |
Well, I guess I'd relate to a movie that played, oh, let's see ... here's a mid/late 70s equivalent to Micah's list:
Rhiannon
Do You Feel Like I Do
Dream On
Hotel California
Livin' Thing
We Will Rock You
Big Ten Inch Record
Wheel in the Sky
Cold as Ice (uh oh, this is going downhill fast)
I guess I could connect to a theoretical That 70s Movie with a soundtrack like that for sheer cheesy nostalgia value, whereas I can imagine someone a tad older running screaming for the exits. With good reason.
Of course, if the producers were kind, they'd bring in Bob Marley and Patti Smith, and if they were kind and a little arty and wanted to be really real about what was on turntables they'd have a lot to toss in (Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Yes, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc etc).
But for that true car-radio, high-school dance feel, I'm afraid it would be a list rather like mine ... still better than That 80s List, though.
(Oh, plus Freebird and Stairway to Heaven. Of course.)

Re: but there was also the 70s ... |
There certainly was.....the stretch from '75 to '77 was pretty good.....all of these songs instantly take me back to my first years in high school hoping against hope that Tricia Chambers would AND wouldn't ask me to dance at one of the after football game dances.........she did, and it was awesome.
Even In The Quietest Moments - Supertramp
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
More Than A Feeling - Boston
Fly Like An Eagle - Steve Miller
Slow Ride - Foghat
Do You Feel Like We Do - Frampton
Green Grass and High Tides - Outlaws
Follow You, Follow Me - Genesis
Oh yeah, there was this concert run at the Tower in Upper Darby in the summer of '76........

Whats wrong with the Florida Guitar Army?
Don't forget...if guitars are outlawed, the only people with guitars will be Outlaws........
Admittedly, Boston was a bit of a reach, but they did some pretty cool stuff with their debut album. Too bad they did the exact same thing on every album after that........

Re: but there was also the 70s ... |
I thought it was Do You Feel Like I Do. (The Frampton song.) LOL, see how good my memory is?
On that list I had albums at the time by Queen, Foghat and Genesis. I didn't like Boston (or Journey/Foreigner). But those songs were definitely all around.
I'm kind of curious about the Rock of Ages movie in the sense that I do wonder how well it stands up as a movie to someone (like me) who actually doesn't like or have personal nostalgic ties to the songs in it. After all, if it's "your era," there's a kind of appeal to the music (or at least a tolerance level) for reasons other than whether you'd have actually liked it at the time (or god knows in retrospect).
On the other hand, I think the pop music from the 60s -- the everyday stuff on the radio -- was massively better than anything we experienced; it doesn't really matter if you were a boomer to enjoy it, while it kind of MIGHT matter that you "lived" the era to enjoy a nostalgia movie on the 80s or, theoretically, the mid/late 70s.
That doesn't mean there wasn't really good music coming out in those years -- of course there was -- but the pop or everyday radio tunes hold up less well and can even be pretty dreadful. Oh Sherrie? Don't Stop Believin'? We Built This City? (Or, on our lists, take your pick if what would be hardest to hear if there wasn't a nostalgic kick along with it!!!)

Boy, this got everybody going...BD? Chill, eh?
;)
Seriously, I meant it as a "marketing joke" ref, as in "if it's NOT about the Boomers, then is it going to make $?"
IE, they ARE the market, I thought; thus, by defn, the 80s suck (ergo, Boomers have 2.0001 kids, thus, market drops; and they are busy taking care of their parents...wait...hey!? Damn it...get the F$*K out of here with that before you...er, nevermind).
What was I saying about Boomers and their kids?
