Would it be violating copyright laws if.... |
....I put together a video compiling clips from public domain TV series (like "You Asked for It", "The Big Record" and "Cavalcade of Stars"), themed around performances by Black singers and musicians? The video would be for the Internet Archive's classic TV section.
The footage and possibly the performances are PD, but not the compositions (words & music). I asked this on another part of the site and got conflicting infomation. Though I doubt there is a single answer to this question.
(this video won't be made for some time. First I have to compile the clips from my collection of PD classic TV files on my computer, and I also need to wait until they fix the limitless bugs in the video editing software I use. Apart from the stuff on my computer, if anyone knows of any videos I could use as sources from this section by other uploaders (I'm half-sleep at 10:17AM, reading to go to bed for sleeping during the day, hence the poor phrasing and craptastic grammar of the preceding), please let me know. Any help would be appriciated. I love you, I really love you, I LOVE YOU!!).

It would be violating copyright law. Playing a copyrighted work over a Public Domain TV episode would be like scrolling the text of a public domain book over a copyrighted movie. Of course, people do it on YouTube all the time, but it's technically not legal.

I'm not playing a copyrighted work over a public domain TV episode. The live musical performance of a song were part of the original public domain episodes itself.
Here's an example clip:

I misunderstood. I got lost somewhere. My personal interpretation would be in that case, if the show's public domain, it's public domain, including any musical performance therein.

OK then, that's OK. Thank you.
I am aware that I am very poor at explaining things.
