GD Years - Odd Or Even? |
Total hypothetical here (hopefully) but imagine an evil wizard approaches you one day, and he informs you that with one wave of his wand he can wipe out the entire catalog of live Grateful Dead shows. Every tape, CD, FLAC, mp3, etc. gone just like that, never to be heard again.
As much as he'd love to do this, somewhere deep in his cold heart is a tiny shred of compassion, so he comes to you with a choice that will affect you and Deadheads around the world. You get to choose whether all odd numbered years or even numbered years survive.
Naturally you try to bargain with him and see if he could split it so that everything before and through the Keith years survives, and everything after is lost. But he ain't having it. He gives you ten seconds to ponder this, and if a decision isn't made at that time then all shows will be lost.
What do you do? Are you willing to give up the Europe '72 tour and fall of '74 so that spring '77 and the '69 Fillmore shows remain???

I would cast a Patronus spell on the wizard, make him produce clean, crisp AUDS for EVERY show and then have a couple of dementors drag his ass to Azkaban

I'd hate to loose '73, but to get '72 and '74 in exchange, then EVEN. Plus I'd get '68 and '70, and '90 for some variety.

Hey great post. Would I rather give up Oct.'68 or Feb.'69? Live without E'72 or Fall'73? Tough choice for sure. I feel like I'm in a round room looking for a corner.

Odds.
Though missing 66, 68, 70, 72, 74(!), 76, 78, 90...would suck.....wait....
You know what? You're just fucked up man :)
Which would you cut off? Your left or right gonad?
I would go with most numbers have an odd in it, so that
would be ok. Wait! no 4-24-72? No 4-14-72? no Junes
from 76???
this is one messed up game you're playing here. Good thing
I've got medication...
Congrats. You have asked the unanswerable! No flies on you :)

Re: GD Years - Odd Or Even? |
Can we have the evens in the 70s and the odds in the 80s? That would still be tough but I think I could handle having 81 and 83 instead of 80 and 81; I'd also rather have 87 and 89 than 86 and 88...and I don't think I could do without 72, 74, and 76.....but no 77! ahhh...this would be impossible. I think I'd just tell teh wizard to flip a coin.

Re: GD Years - Odd Or Even? |
60's - odd(68 & 69 being close to equal, but 67 beats 66.)
70's - even(Tough because I love 71, but I think 76 and 78 beat 75 and 79)
80's - odd(Just seems like I enjoy the odd years in the 80's, but I changed my mind. See below.)
90's - odd(1991)
Perhaps I'd re-think the 80's. Those acoustic shows are hard to pass-up. I think I could live with 88 rather than 89 and 82 rather than 81 if it meant getting the acoustic shows. Thus, I change my vote to EVEN for the 80's.

"70's - even(Tough because I love 71, but I think 76 and 78 beat 75 and 79)"
75 and 79?! What about '77? That's what tips it for me. I'll take '77 over '76 and '78 combined. Plus, I prefer '73 to '74 and '71 to '70 overall. '72 is a huge loss, but oh well.

Here's how I got there. I matched 72 vs. 77(the heavyweights)....and went from there.
72 > 77(For me this is not as close as it might be for others.)
71 > 70(I agree 71 is better)
73 = 74(Too close to call)
76 > 75(Easy, 76)
78 > 79(Again a very narrow margin, but I like 78 over Brent year #1)

Re: GD Years - Odd Or Even? |
I'd take the Odds even though 75 screws you out of a whole year of shows.
68 hard to lose but 69 is good. 70 electric is really sloppy and over rated imo but the wooden sets would suck to lose. Come to think of it if I go with odd years there would be NO acoustic sets except a small sample in 81. BUT nobody mentioned Jerry shows being wiped out so..
Europe 72 would be a HUGE blow but late 71 and 73 should make up for it.

Hard choice. But if I had to say, I'm thinking I'd go with the odd years.
73 is perhaps my personal favorite year, 77 is, well, 77. And as many of you know, I couldn't do without Fall>Winter 79. And then 81 and 83 have some choice stuff as well.
Then again...
Is grabbing the evil wizard and threatening him with being forced into prolonged coversation with Rob unless he forsakes his dastardly plan not an option?
Or perhaps we could gag him, put him in a cow suit and dump him in Dire's back yard?

Re: GD Years - Odd Or Even? |
I was going to go even, but, you make some good points . Also, I assume this is limited to what is out there , thus 69 over 68 because of the number of shows , and it is one of those years where they are very different in the beginning, and the end, same with 71 . 73 and 74 are a coin toss for me, but with 73 you get "Bird Song", and "HC Sunshine" .I would miss 76, but in 77 they pretty much what they didi in 78, but better, and the early 79 shows would give you taste of the late 78 band . 85, 89, and 91 are better bets, I think than their surrounding years . And though you get sort of screwed by 75 ( but those shows a GOOD shows ), you lose the short and weak 86, and 95 is mercifully short ( and you get that late Jerry "Visions of Johanna" , one of the best things in the last few years, with "Days Between").
Thanks Crazy Otto for making us think about the Band's history in a fun way !

that would most assuredly sway him toward relenting on the whole deal (though we could throw him a bone and just give him 91-95 inclusively - wouldn't break MY heart)

No no. Violence is not the answer. Clearly he had a very painful experience in his past, something related to the Dead -- he trusted a woman who wore her pants too tight, maybe -- and it's left his heart two sizes too small. Or he's a Zep fan (what with being a wizard and all, and clearly a dark one), and he's mad about that thread.
We must expand his heart with the power of song. Everyone together now: fahoo foray, dahoo doray ...
If that doesn't work, you can always pick a good furniture-exploding tune to smash that wand to bits.

Re: GD Years - Odd Or Even? |
Well, it appears to be a matter of debate. "Fahoo foray" or "fa who foraze"? There are probably many threads devoted to it on Grinch forums.
But the real question is: What DO those guards chant in the Wizard of Oz? "Oh-wee-oh, we-oooohh-a" or "O We Love the Old One"? I vote for the first, and refuse to believe it's officially known as The Winkie's Chant, which is somehow just not right at all.
I was thinking we could immobilize the Wizard with the 5/8/77 Morning Dew, but in fact he could just be immobilized by sitting him in front of a computer. He'd start by searching on questions of wizardly interest and end up on a wizard forum engaged in debates about whether the best wands were made in the odd or even years.
So, no worries ...

Ha--another great one! Can't get it to "play" right in my head at this time, but was feeling there should be a "de" sound in there somewhere? Oh well, the Grinch one is so good I'll let it slide. ;)
But, really, the "Winkie's Chant"?!?
Damn, I had no idea...

The Wizard of Oz may be the number one example of a movie that's better than the book. Here's Wikipedia's description of Winkie Country, the land of the Wicked Witch. Thank goodness the movie didn't introduce us to Jack Pumpkinhead or take us on to Oogaboo.

shoulda known Sir Wm. would keep '68 and I'd wager the 3/11/68 Sacramento show played a part in that decision
