Dead at funerals |
Please excuse the pun - there was no way around it...
In response to the lovely pictures of Mandojammer's daughter's wedding, someone asked if any Dead tunes were played at the reception. I was recently doing some estate planning with my folks and funerals, not weddings, are on my mind. I plan to have fairly conventional Christian burial, but the idea of the Garcia/Grisman/Rice Amazing Grace worked in somehow is appealing to me. Does anyone have instructions to family to play any Dead or Dead-related mussic at their funeral?

I'm betting on having enough lead time so I can disappear into the ONP never to be seen again, then there would only be a memorial service as the vacant body would be feeding the bears somewhere deep in the woods,far from a trail. Since that is where I go these days when I want a spiritual "experience" that is where I want to be when I escape this mortal coil.

Yes, we have done this many (yikes...well, four now and counting) times...my suggestions:
Use R Hunter's solo version of BofRain (DEAD is too upbeat; use it during "party" later if appropriate; use Hunter during "service").
BDPal/Ripple from AmBeat, use during "service".
[By service I mean the period of reflection, comments on the deceased, etc.; party, so to speak, Wake in our family, is later, and thus more a celebration...]

I personally would like to have either DP 23 (1972-09-17) The Other One played, its about as spiritual a piece of music I think i've ever heard.
Though DP 36 Dark Star > Morning Dew might be even more perfect.
You may say, well thats a minimum of 39 minutes of music, too bad. I'd like to have a part of the funeral where people can choose to sit through it or not, but I definitely want some dead bumped to send me off. And if im not buried in a dead t shirt, shame on you mama!

I second Ripple. Also, Attics of My Life from American Beauty sounds like, and can be easily interpreted by non-Deadhead as, a traditional hymn to the Creator.
I've often thought the Beatles' Across the Universe would be another appropriate choice.
Depending on the personality of the deceased, GDTRFB might be an upbeat way to end the ceremony. :-)

Brokedown Palace, Winterland 6/8/77 will be played at mine.
Although, I'm having my funeral like Morrie did in "Tuesdays With Morrie" - I plan on being there so I can hear all the nice thngs people are going to say and enjoy all the good food.

A very close friend's younger brother died years ago and when we scattered his ashes along the river/creek bed on their land in Mendocino County (within shouting distance of the hog farm) we all sang, through tears, Brokedown Palace. It was, to say the least, very moving.
