By far the most thorough account of all this is Hank Albarelli'a book, A Terrible Mistake. It's a tough read, though -- his editor apparently couldn't decide if the manuscript was a narrative or a file cabinet. It ended up being hundreds of pages of detailed accounts gleaned from government documents, interviews, memoirs, archives, etc. I came away with little doubt that Frank Olson was murdered because, after being dosed, he showed that he could reveal secrets the CIA couldn't risk exposing.

The safe houses in SF and Greenwich Village and the activities of George White summarized in this article are just the tip of a very large iceberg. Some of it was rehearsed in the Marks book cited in this article and in Acid Dreams, but Albarelli's tome is the real treasure trove on this topic. He has a Web site here: http://www.albarelli.net/
that reprints lots of the original documents.

This is Dead-related only in that Kesey and Hunter were two of the subjects in a different CIA-funded research program. They saw the light in one of the strangest of places, and the rest is history...

thanks for the info I know Marks book- but not Albarelli's
in another account of this story..Olson "jumped" out the window several days after he was dosed..saying he was dosed when he jumped- was a purposeful misdirection.
to blame the drug- instead of murderers who pushed him.

I think they also dosed Lee Harvey Aswald when he was a Marine in Japan, the base where he was assigned was one of the bases where this was done..but I seriously doubt they anticipated what he would do, or that there soon would be hippies-like the GD turning this would be sword into plow.
but even a good plow can't help if you plant ice.
