'best of's for radio special |
I'm producing a several hour radio special next month featuring African-American artists playing songs they wrote and/or popularized followed by the GD covering it in (at least) one version. A draft working song list is at bottom.
These songs run the gamut from a single performance to hundreds. For many I have (often several) GD versions in mind, but would like to know if you:
- have enthusiastic suggestions for particular GD performances (longer is not automatically better);
- are aware of any 'ranking' lists for GD performances of these songs;
- see noteworthy gaps in the list below (mostly pulled from Song & Lyric Finder
http://www3.clearlight.com/~acsa/intro.htm)
Thanks for any assistance and I'll post an announcement here as time gets closer to the special (2/18/11). Yes, you'll able to listen live online.

Re: 'best of's for radio special |
My son has often said that Pig sounds like James Brown. (And not in reference to Man's World in particular.) Which I'm sure would make Pig pretty happy.
In fact, I bet Pig took his rap schtick from African-American blues artists. It would be interesting to find one that sounds Pig-ish. Not that I have any actual suggestions ... but maybe someone who really knows the blues would?

Off the top of my head Althea, I think the person who sounds most like Pig is Leon Russell, especially in '70 and '71. Its funny that another white guy playing essentially black music sounds identical to Pig - who in my opinion sings and sounds like a black man. Very soulful, powerful blues sound, and of course the raps.

Re: 'best of's for radio special |
great idea for a show. I look forward to listening, please post a link.
Don't Ease Me In is based on the Henry Thomas song Don't Leave Me Here. Henry Thomas was a wonderful Texas bluesman who played a mean panpipe aka quills. He also inspired Canned Heat's Goin' up the Country with his Bull Doze Blues and has also been covered more recently by the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

I would go with an acoustic Don't Ease from the Dead, the 05-02-70 is a fav or mine.

Re: 'best of's for radio special |
Yes, great idea -- I notice not too many suggestions yet. I will note that four songs listed here were played on one recording - Beat it on down, Ain't it Crazy, Second That Emotion, and Hard to Handle can all be found on the Ladies & Gentlemen disc, and all are excellent choices. Very fresh, clean 1970 sound live at the Fillmore East.

Yup, that run is already in my mind for if nothing else, the 'I Second that Emotion' on the 29th.

Re: 'best of's for radio special |
Since you mentioned 4-29-71, that reminds me that the boys played their last version of Midnight Hour during the encore of that show. A great version and clearly a cover from an African American artist.

turns out The Olympics weren't the first recording artist for Good Lovin'. Lemme B Good
recorded it about 6 months earlier.

Re: 'best of's for radio special |
I have a few questions, if you don't mind answering whatever you're able to/willing to disclose.
Who are the African-American artists covering these GD songs? Are they famous, or relatively unknown? If I were to suggest songs that aren't on your list already, how would you include them? Didn't these cover song performances already happen?

If I understand correctly, these are songs that were written and/or performed by African-American Artists and subsequently covered by The Grateful Dead.

Why not? It's great fun!
I was listening to that new Matrix as well today. Sounds amazing! I put on 6/28/76 afterwards because I fucking love that show, and Happiness is Drumming is so sweet. I find it much more enjoyable than many Fire on the Mountains.

And don't forget that killer 06/28/76 "High Time".
One for Wisconsin.
