A couple of Beatles LPs came my way as gifts, but the first I actually bought was the white album. Loved it - till it got stolen by a "friend" at school some years later, along with the rest of my minuscule collection.
The LP I missed most, and the first non-Beatles record I bought was Mungo Jerry's "Electronically Tested". As well as the song everyone loves, "In The Summertime" it had the tremendous "Baby Jump", still a guilty pleasure:

Mother's Milk by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was a little kid at the time and was at a Tower Records with my mom. She told me to pick out a CD. I picked one, handed it to her, and she bought it without really even glancing at the CD. I had no idea who this band was, but the album cover got my attention, and I became an instant fan. Sadly my mom returned the disc a few days later, but a love for boobs and music was sparked at a very young age.

My grandmother waited at the curb as I went into Bradleys to buy my first album. My Dad was wearing out the grooves of Yellow Brick Road and I wanted my very own Elton John record and I wanted to buy it myself. So, it was Elton John-Greatest Hits that I plunked down my birthday money for, as I had just turned seven. That album was huge in '75. Haven't listen to him since middle school.

hey , that was my first album , too! although my was from caldor!!! did you also love the captain fantastic album...???? havent listened to him since middle school???? i saw him in the mid to late eighties and have to say the man can put on a show!!!he had the members from the yellow brick road album back!!! i would without hesitation go see him tomorrow if the opportunity arose!!!

About his showmanship, Elton is on the Freddy Mercury level. Not b/c of their preferences, but you can tell they loved, had to perform and that was also their gift. And they are both British (somehow that factors). Opposed to the David Byrne level, the highest.
I saw him last year as a guest host on Spectacle, E.C.'s show. The guest was Diana Krall (a little weird being interviewed by your husband). I hadn't seen pic of him probably since middle school and looked great, and like he was having fun too.
Is there a name for folks who really like E.J like D/h, Parrotheads, ect.?

'Meet The Beatles' is an American version of their second UK release 'With The Beatles' which was the first LP I bought. A couple of months later an aunt bought it for me as an Xmas present. 1 record player and 2 copies of the same record.

I can't be the oldest person here, can I? But I clearly recall saving up my allowance and buying "Greatest Hits of 1964". If I remember right, it had a little selection of Motown and lots of bubble-gum pop. I think my second was one of Peter Paul and Mary's, and soon it was Dylan, and then on down the road.

I'm up there with you. With my very first earned cash I headed over to the local hi-fi shop (they didn't have mega stores like Tower in those days) and bought "Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown" by The Vince Guaraldi Trio (1964), my initial jam heroes. After that it was all downhill with that evil rock music.

The Charlie Brown Suite was the only cd my kids would fall asleep too. I kept trying different music and nothing worked till Miles Davis Kind of Blue. One of them said "Hey this isn't Charlie Brown" but that was it.

Older than me, but mine was a Greatest Hits, too. I forget the name, though I still have it (in storage); it has Delaney and Bonnie, Melanie, and Bread on it.
That and Diana Ross and the Supremes Greatest Hits were the two first albums I had on my own.
My best friend had the show album from Hair. We played it over and over in her basement in 6th grade.
Also I used to make tapes from the radio of my favorite songs, so I'd have mixes of things like Crocodile Rock.

Elton John's Greatest Hits (1st one). Vinyl. I didn't really buy it - it was a gift I asked for. First one I actually bought was either Beatle's Let It Be or CCR's Greatest Hits. Aerosmith's Toys In The Attic was also an early gift. All vinyl.
First GD album was What A Long Strange Trip It's Been - Best Of (long out of print I think). It had a studio version of Dark Star and lots of E72, but what really got my attention was the St. Steven. I looked for another St. Steven at the local record store (!) and ended up with Live Dead. I guess you could say that is when I got on the bus.
Edit: First piece of music I owned was a 45 of Olivia Newton John's "Have You Ever Been Mellow". The second was a 45 of Elton John's "Phily. Freedom" - the flip side had a "I Saw Her Standing There" with John Lennon, who I didn't know - I had a lot to learn.

Tough to say; I defn bought MANY 45s first as they were a buck...eg, Doors + CCR + Jimi + CREAM during 67-68. My brothers had ALL the albums, of which Moby Grape with the finger on the cover was my fav, as that cover was so exciting given the hoopla it generated. I think that Wheels of Fire, Xmas of 68 was both the first album and first double album I bought, with $ from Grandma (I know it was a gift, but I picked it out...assume that counts...ie, I picked it and handed it to them to pay for it?). If not, it was one of the early CCR albums (brothers weren't buying those).
I started with DEAD in 70, buying them as they came out if the brothers didn't, or didn't leave them at home. Bought all the 71 boot legs, but by 75 was heavily into tape trading.
I have them all, EXCEPT any post 75 or so DEAD (gave them away). Never bought 8 track; started buying cassettes in the 80s for car...Police, that sort of thing. Greatest hits of 60s bands, etc.

If we're talking about albums the first one I bought was probably Bridge Over Troubled Water in 1970. But the earliest singles I bought were Lime in the Coconut, Harry Nillson, and Daniel (Elton John).
