Re: Non-Dead - Nice gesture |
What a guitarist he was! RIP, Hubert. I'm sure he must be counted as an influence of the Grateful Dead, with credits on so many of the songs they covered. I started really getting into the blues and the Dead around the same time. It took a few years before I started looking for links and connections through music history between so many artists and their influences. But of course now that is all clear to me.
I have been listening to a weekly blues show on BBC Radio 2 for the past 12 years. Harmonica player Paul Jones is the host. He payed tribute to Hubert Sumlin this week and played about 30 minutes of the man's music. It can be streamed for one week, ending on Monday.

Hmmm, was going to weigh in on the whole "why'd you expect denigration?" biz, but got confused thinking about it...other than to realize (sorry, BD, but it's true), you're one of "us", and as "part of the problem" (somebody told me you were just like me or some such, which I took as a real compliment but a slap in the virtual face for you), well then, you can't expect much in the way of responses at odds with your take on the news, eh? Disturbing, isn't it?
You never did maneuver (ahem) Dire into position for PM, ya know? You certainly get my vote for a candidate able to lead us into the Brave New World of Post DEAD music...as HFlow noted, I failed miserable in that regard.

I agree - it was a fine thing to do and raises the Glimmer Twins a notch or two in my estimation. I'm not sure why you anticipate denigration though... you think maybe we have an asshole or two hiding in the woodwork?

Yea - we do. Dire hasn't weighed in a long, long time....
He and I still get to battle for that title (although I fear I may be losing ground on recent participants).
How'd you "like" Ryan and Courtney doing Richard and Linda?

Ah yes - THAT clip... Courtney is quite something, not something you'd want to take home to meet the folks, kind of something, but definitely something...
I cleansed my thoughts with some of this. I love how the Cardinals are set up here, sort of reminiscent of a prayer meeting, appropriately since it's in a church.

Re: Non-Dead - Nice gesture |
Nice.
I was supposed to see Neal Casal in Chris Robinson's band last night but could not justify the drive back and forth to Great American Music Hall in SF as would get home in the wee hours and don't bounce back at work like I used to do.
Glad Ryan is out doing this acoustic tour, but what I really want is him to get together with Caitlyn and her huband and dust off those Whiskeytown tunes... A ton of that stuff never got released. He is doing some W'town tunes on the solo acoustic tour (16 Days was great).

Great gesture by the old boys. Nice to see they still honor those who inspired their own success.
As for the "denigrate" comment, is that a challenge?
If so, I suppose I could throw out something like:
Stones paying for the funeral? Well, as long as he isn't being cremated, I guess we don't have to worry about Keith inhaling him.

Yeah, you could - but you don't have to. (but Man, that'd be some heady snuff!)
The Stones have always acknowledged their debt to Wolf and Hubert, to Mud, to Otis Spann, and everybody else out of Chicago...for them debt = love. This is the way they show it.
Gods Bless You Hubert - Wolf'll be glad to see ya, if there's such a meetin' place...probably wonderin' what took ya so long! And, Gods Bless The Rolling Stones.

I told Keith when we posed for these portraits that having the fag was going to make him look older than me...he should've listened; I feel as good as I look in that photo, eh? Been cutting down on my direct sunlight though--working wonders, don't ya think?
Last time I saw SDH he was a light, golden crisp, while I have passed that shade after spending a minute or two longer out during this past July...we call it "Sonoran Desert Amber".

How dare you compare this mere musician with the pharaoh Ramesses II, who had even more gold and "bitches" than Keef ( 44 to 56 sons, and 40-44 daughters, talk about "some girls bring me children..."!). And he was played by Yul Brynner ...
Don't think he played guitar though ...

That's a great story. Thanks for sharing it. Love that they paid homage to one of their influences. Similar story to Babe It Ain't No Lie on the Reckoning album. I recently read that Garcia wanted to put it on the record so royalties would go to Elizabeth Cotton.

That's cool re Elizabeth Cotton. Never heard that story.
At the most recent location of the Cat's Cradle (yes, the Vonnegut connection - see Ice 9) in Chapel Hill/Carrboro NC they have a huge mural/pic of Elizabeth Cotton.

Re: Non-Dead - Nice gesture |
yeah who just exactly did you expect would denigrate them for that? The ONLY negative arguement I could see a person make is that they owe Blues artist more for using their music but as far as I know the Stones always properly credited artist so they recieved royalties so I have never seen them as robbers. Quite the contrary they were one of the artists that revived a ton of artists careers and made them money by making their music more known to a younger audience. Every body wins imp and for them to go above and beyond is a classy genuine gesture.
I don't get too bent out of shape by the whole purist thing anyway. Led Zeppelin for instance was absolutely SHAMEFUL to take songwriting credit instead of saying arranged by on things they couldnt get sued over ( traditional or whatever ). I never understood that. As if the Lemon Song wasnt obvious, and In My Time of Dyin and Nobodys fault are word for word! The music they put to it is all them so why not say trad arranged by Led Zeppelin like everyone else does? But I stopped being hung up on that one after seeing every Bluesman claim to have written Stagger Lee because they change the spelling. Just because they werent making as much money isnt it the smae thing? Ok major tangent

I just figure anything posted here gets a contrarian response at some point or another. And as a tangent to your tangent, see the final encore for Wilco last night? With friends like that....
Encore 2:
Cruel to Be Kind w/Nick Lowe
You Are Not Alone w/Mavis Staples (Tweedy penned tune on her album he produced; 1st time performed by Wilco).
The Weight w/Nick Lowe and Mavis Staples

I don't know - always worth keeping an eye on the owl and the bear. Someone will eventually get it there. I pretty much just stream roadcase from time to time. Seeing them at end of January at the Warfield. Looking forward to it - as are the wife and kid. Wilco is my 10 year old's favorite band - along with Lucinda and Richard T. and yes, she also loves Queen, Abba, and Lady Gaga.

Talking about Wilco getting intimate, I came across this Tiny Desk concert (that's a series I've got bookmarked to explore further - the Gillian and Dave set is excellent too) the other day - I'm sure you've seen it already but I'll link it for the benefit of those who haven't.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZAKTCeE70YGot to love the desktop drum kit - and is there a cooler guy behind a guitar than Nels Cline right now?

Re: Non-Dead - Nice gesture |
theyve been doing that one with Nick Lowe I think since he's been on the bill. The Mavis Stapes one though - wow. The Weight from the LAst Waltz with the Staples singers is one of my all time favorites. As much as Wilco is my favorite I know they couldnt possibly have nailed the harmonies like the Band but I'm sure it's amazing still
