clapton admits to being an arrogant jerk in those days. he was selfish, and extremely overcritical of himself. he always strived for perfection, and didn't see the talent in himself that others saw. he was always too jealous of guys like hendrix and page, and he was very irritable.
in later years when he's been sober i've seen him work the crowd a bit, but the playing doesn't compare to his cream days obviously.
