I find the 1976 JGB feel just a little too laid back for my taste and I'm not completely convinced about Donna as a vocalist.
That being said her vocals with JGB are a vast improvement on her work with the Dead.

I have a question for you. Could you come up w/ a CD's worth of JGB playing gospel or P&W music? Donna sings solo on one or two I think. Maybe? Not only would that be a neat CD to have, but I have a JGB/GD conversion candidate (which is kinda funny if you think about who my 'target' is). I was going to take my usual Reckoning route, but this might be more effective. Maybe get some of this in on a Sunday morning. (Always go for the music director :-)

Some are a little obscure, but most have been on releases.
Click on Jerry under solo bands. Leave the two fields ‘any’ and click ‘find songs’.

I have wanted to do that for some time. One hesitation I have is that it be used for "conversion" purposes, i.e., of the religious type, rather than musical ...
I will work on it, though. The Sisters and Brothers on 9-20-76 is very lovely, I urge you to listen to it!
Off the top of my head there's also "A Strange Man," "Who Was John," and "I'll Be With Thee," all of which feature Donna prominently to very good effect. There's a few others that have that gospel vibe without being religious. Actually, I think of TLEO as being in that groove.

Ring, it's the music director at my church. I think any religious conversions have taken place. It's to convert to getting some JGB songs in on Sunday morning. I mean I like the hymns, but some contemporary P&W music is painful more than once. Thanks Ring.

'76 JGB is like licorice, I think. For the most part, including 9/20/76, I find it dull and uninspiring. I feel the same way about '77 JGB. '77 would be just about the last year I'd turn to, '76 second-to-last, when I wanted to hear some Garcia Band.
But of course YMMV!

i certainly wouldn't put 'dull and uninspiring' as a descriptor for '76 JGB; if you were handing in a research paper with that answer, i'd quickly toss it in the trash
i do enjoy the more laid-back approach to '76 Jerry, but as anyone who has read my posts over the years that does seem rather odd since i like the fierceness and mind-bending speed of Jerry's guitar in '68-'70 GD, and yet i love the tone of Jerry's guitar in '76, and how at times he can spin out whirlpools of feeling amidst all that calmness
but hey, next week i might post that in fact '78 is the best year for JGB, one never knows

So you're the kind of teacher who insists that students share your views? Don't we evaluate students on hard work (i.e., how much they have studied the material), logic, etc.? In that case, I assure you I have spent as much time as probably anyone listening to and thinking about this stuff, and further it's demonstrable that JGB 1976 runs at slower paces than almost any other year (save perhaps JGB 1977). Given my antipathy for long, slow (or turgid, somnambulent) dirges --a taste about which there's no point arguing-- I think I have done my job and deserve an 'A'.
My blog (
http://jgmf.blogspot.com/) doesn't do a ton on 1976, but I'll get there. Maybe I'll try to listen to 9/20/76 and leave a post about it. For now, having listened to everything from that year, I place September (i.e., 10-11-12, 15-16-17-18, 20) as just about the weakest part of the year. There's barely a show in there that I like even a little bit. But again, YMMV.

well, i'm not a 'teacher' or even in the profession (though i was in the past), and i certainly didn't mean that a student would have to share my views (those sorts of teachers are the worst), but if one turns in a paper with the argument that '76 is 'dull and uninspiring', well it doesn't really hold much weight from a research stand point, that's all i was saying ... but not to worry, i wasn't really being true-life serious, you probably have listened to more JGB music than i have or ever will, so i can respect your views on the subject
also, you can certainly find some pretty seriously not-so-laid back versions of songs in '76, that is fact; entire shows (which i rarely have time for), yes well that is another thing altogether

Yeah, there are moments. But when we are talking "aggregates" like "1976", one has to generalize.
To me '76 is broken up into microperiods that vary a lot:
1/7-10/76: the Booker experiment. Awesome.
January-February-March: settling in with Keith and Donna. A snoozefest for the most part, though Moonlight Mile was certainly a beautiful song for them to do, and they did it well.
April: hot (see 4/1 and 4/3/76b).
May: solid, but not spectacular.
July: not really enough data to judge, but to me, like May.
August: some great stuff. 8/16/76 is a really nice, overlooked show. 8/22 is also excellent.
September: a snooze-fest.
November: see May.
December: interesting for the steel player a few times, and generally above average for the year.
IMO.

well, you definitely have given it a lot more thought than me :)
btw, do you make an exception for 3/6, Moores Theatre (better 1st set than 2nd set if i recall rightly)? you have to admit that Tore Up is quite exceptional.
and i so agree with you about April and glad that you think as well, because 4/1 is HOT! ... 4/3 i cannot recall, so i'll have to give that a listen
i actually have not given the latter part of '76 much of a listen, at least i cannot recall having done so ... the problem with never taking notes and a faulty memory...

I love 3/6/76, but mostly for the stunning tape and the Moonlight Mile. I don't recall Tore Up specifically but I'll try to check it out.

excellent choices. i very much agree with you, however i can assure you '76 jgb was far from uninspiring. perhaps too laid back for your liking? '78 has a lot of my favorite shows ever and i agree '77 was lacking in quality. add '82 to the list, and that's what my jgb listening almost entirely consists of. ('76, '78, '80-'83, '87-'90)

Yeah, '76 for the most part is too laid back for me. I like Lonesome and a Long Way From Home and Mighty High because they're hot in '76. Moonlight Mile is breathtaking and it doesn't bore me. ;-) And there are individual shows I love, such as 4/3/76b. But, overall, including the official DLG release (5/21/76), things are just too slow for me.
I should have mentioned I like '83 from May 31-end of the year. Those mid-'83 shows (5/31, 6/1 most of all) are very hot. I like some of November '82, and of course one has to genuflect before the nice shows in June '82, but early '82 before that leaves me a little cold.

Interesting! I listen mostly to JGB about '75-'80, with only occasional forays earlier and later. Not that there isn't some good stuff earlier and later, but I've narrowed the range of what for me is most likely to please. Earlier, is varied. Some great things, and some stuff like LOM that I am just not going to want to listen to all the way through. Later, also varied and more likely to be croaky Jerry, low-energy (or the opposite, frenzied in a cocaine-ish sort of way that I don't like). I do like Garcia with Grisman from any era, and I like the later gospely vibe, when they pull it off, which isn't always. (It's a great sound when it works, it just doesn't work often enough.)

See, even JGB 1975 doesn't do that much for me, apart from the Edward -> Let's Spend the Night Together performances and a few other things. I know I am supposed to be knocked out that it's Nicky Hopkins, but I find him rather a sloppy mess in the '75 JGB context.

I was thinking the same about Donna's singing as I listened to the climax of 'Ride mighty high' on the show Ringolevio recommended here. (You're right about this show, Ringo) She's loud and strong but completely in tune and on harmony. Impressive.
