to the GD 1969 lovers |
I recently DL'd from bt.etree the 2/28 and 3/2/69 show. I'm going to give one of them to an old friend tomorrow,he's a gifted bass man, but with little early GD exposure. Back in the early 70's, he played bass in a Bay Area Band called
Loveship 2 - They are both grate shows via Cliffs 100 rating, but I can't make up my mind. Should I just flip a coin? haha.
Both are clean sounding, tho not from the Fillmore West Box Set. It's the best Phil bass one I'm lookin for. Any suggestions?

That's kind of like the choice between lobster and cracked crab for lunch at the end of the cinematic classic Trading Places. I say go with the same solution and give him both.

Re: to the GD 1969 lovers |
haha! I'll flip a coin, the other one is for a deadhead friend who's happy with lobster and crab. I can't burn anymore, that is, CD's until monday. Here goes! "We want Phil! we want Phil!" -28, tails 03 (Flip)= tails.
Edit: when i first typed this there was only 1 reply after 35min (i took a run) now it's the missing friend formation. 3/2 stands.
this is how i contribute, questions but few answers, 3/2 seem a bit better, but i heard it last. after warm ups, runz are a blur. grate way to exercise.i'm rastarunner at a jog site. this whole edit took 20min haha. click

tough to say. If I recall correctly, phil sticks out more in the 3/2 DS vs. the 2/27 DS, they are quite different versions. Other than that, IDK YO

I agree with Larry. Both would be best, but if you have to pick one you won't go wrong with either. (I think that makes sense!)

Re: to the GD 1969 lovers |
from a phil standpoint, i have to go with 2/28. listen to the whole cryptical suite and the st. stephen > eleven. that should be enough to convince you, however phil is spot-on the entire show. this is hands down my favorite eleven of all-time. also, my favorite '60s dew. the 15 min jam before caution is just sublime as well.
i always go back and forth between which show i like better overall, but i do give a very slight edge to 2/28. you can't go wrong either way though. perhaps you'll like 3/2 slightly better.

Have you heard 1968-10-12 or Two from the vault? I find both of those versions to be a notch above the elevens from 2/28-3/2. Maybe its just me...

i've heard all 3 versions many many times. they are all played so extraordinarily well, but 02/28 is the one that impresses bobby deniro the most. i find 10/12 to be slightly better than the version from two from the vault.

when i started collecting shows, it was from the internet and a few reel to reel FM shows a deadhead friend had. I was a second set and/or Darkstar nut - All era's - I'm better now :)

right on. Maybe I need to allocate some time to re-listen to them. I've been very slowly discovering the gems within that legendary box set for the past year and a half.

wisc, do you have copies of all the shows? i'd be willing to help fill out your fillmore west '69 collection if it's lacking in anyway. this is music that MUST be heard by every deadhead. let me know if you're interested.

Personally, I'd go for 2/28. One of the best shows of the year, if not of all time.

Re: to the GD 1969 lovers |
I think 2-28-69 is one of the best shows of all time. By contrast, I think 3-2-69 is easily the least successful show of the run.
To my ear, they're constantly hunting for the groove and never quite finding it. The DS>SS>E>LL medley to start is a series of missed opportunities. The TOO is IMO heinous in comparison to any of the other three nights of the run. The DDHNM is the one real highlight for me. Yes, there's a long Alligator > Caution, but I think the jamming is actually more interesting and productive in the shorter version from 2-28.
I know the show has its fans, but I have to disagree with them. Give your friend 2-28 I say.

Lou,
It's the Crypt reprise and sweet flow into Death Don't that makes that 3/02 suite so special. The TOO is indeed a bit ragged.

give the 3/2 DS another listen. Its anything but missed opportunities. I might agree with you on the rest of it though.

Re: to the GD 1969 lovers |
If you think your friend might like a very good Lovelight, that's a huge boost for 2/28. It's not for everyone though. The Crypt > TOO > Crypt > Death Don't from 3/02 will blow your friend away, a best ever type sequence. But the TOO from 02/28 might be a top 5 ever as well. A lot of the other stuff is similar too, but for some reason I remember the 3/02 Dew to be stronger.
Honestly, I can't separate any of the shows. There are times when I think 2/27, possibly the least regarded of the run, is the best. Seems to change every month.
