Hey, it just hit me.
We're the subject of a sociology experiment!
Here's the research premise: Virtual communities are an agreement to suspend disbelief. They rely on an appearance of reality -- e.g., that posters are anonymous but represent real individuals -- but of course everyone knows that the emperor could be naked. I could be a 16-year-old boy. WT could be a British grandma. Cliff could be posting from the Sea Shepherd. So there's an unstated acceptance of certain "rules of the game" and that a virtual persona will be a reflection of the real person. Otherwise there's no purpose to the interaction, since folks don't tend to be interested in having conversations in a hall of mirrors.
But what happens if you interject into a virtual community the appearance of deception? How does the community, which relies for its appeal (and existence) on the idea that the virtual reflects the real, cope with what is essentially a threat to its existence AS a virtual community? How would such a community, particularly in an essentially unmoderated environment (like the IA), "self-police" -- confirm its own rules, determine and reveal what is happening, exclude and include, behave like a real community, etc?
OK, no, I don't think this is really an experiment. (Though it would sure be funny if someone -- WT, perhaps? Elbow? I'm looking for a science type here -- popped out from behind the curtain and said, "Bingo! Good job! Experiment, over!")
But it certainly does function as IF it's an experiment. And I'm sure it serves to illustrate ... something.
Incidentally, I read these things in the morning (it's currently 10 a.m.-ish) and got up today to find NO interaction on ANYTHING but the Kochaballoo. I hope this is cuz most (real) folks were out having a nice Saturday.
Now back to the regularly scheduled programming and/or social experiment and/or implosion in the hall of mirrors.

Splue, I don't know if you're Kochman -- I'm mixed on that -- but if you are, I vote for you to be the personality that the others are absorbed into, a la the denoument of Sybil. You're generally more clever than the others.

Obviously I'm being satirical, but I do think it reveals some interesting facets of the online world. It could be utilized as a case study in some academic research. Actually observing it is rather less interesting, of course, and a lot more sad.

No, you are right. It's all being run by the mice: We are all part of a huge super-computer.
The answer to life the universe and everything is 42.

6 × 9 = 42, that is
(using math in base 13)

Splue, I don't think it's cute. You misunderstood. There are levels on which it's funny (perhaps Monty Python, perhaps black humor); levels on which it's sad; levels on which it's revealing. All those levels can be true at once.
Of course, if you're being harrassed in the real world, that really sucks in a big way and I'm very sorry for what you're going through. But you didn't need to post this copy-and-paste of the thread below. You might consider editing that out so it's just a critique of me, without the long copy and paste. That's OK, I don't mind. It's your opinion. Sorry to upset you.

Actually, thats the second time u havent answered
my question of who the real grateful dead moderator is. Is it u??? Is this a game that u have cooked up??? I notice my account was duplicated on the same nite u posted ur grand essay. Its kind of obvious that ur not truly empathetic, & yet u still take the time 2 hopscotch around my question. Cant sumone who's always bragging so much about their writing skills answer simpl questions???????Maybe ur Tollundism all along!!!! I will tak this 2 the management of the Grateful Dead 2 let them know what is happening/ it may take time. I want them 2 read the lack of resposes/ lack of help from key ppl who self-elected themselves
gods of the band's forum. Oh, & my boyfrien is a great proofreader & ill seem less like a tard, i promise. Hes probly better than u.
