trolls and such |
I find the amount of attention useless and ignorant people receive here to be astounding. In a forum stocked with so many very intelligent people,to see these sub-humans engaged in lengthy "conversation" with multiple participants is inexplicable,I would think a better use of someone's time might be banging your head against the wall repeatedly.A good example would be Pilgrim's thread, his first post in 6 years is devoted to trolls, while on the same page there are threads dedicated to Comes a Time,Weather Report Suite,4/3/70,Brent's passing, etcetera.I took an hour to formulate a thread on the Other One and generate some discussion and received 2 responses, the same amount of responses as Splue who puked up some horseshit about murderers and girl crushes, and 55 less than the 57 devoted to don't come around here no more. Before anyone gets all heated I am by no means criticizing anyone for who or what they chose to respond to,as this is none of my concern nor business.I'm simply pointing out what I see as an incongruity in the level of intelligence normally on display here,on what I might add is a forum dedicated for the most part to the music of the GD,not as far as I know to argue with a knuckle dragging racist clown or reprobates of that ilk.

I'm sorry if you took my post as a devotion to trolls. I was merely trying to emphasize that I find this forum basically the same as I did 6 years ago.
Case in point; your well thought out, informative post on The Other One gets a scant amount of reply. While your post with the word 'troll' in the subject line gets enough responses to choke a donkey. Most of which contain juvenile, internet-muscles posturing of a ridiculously pathetic nature.
I just thought that the pink elephant might have been removed from the room by now.
Peace to you and yours.

I understood your post Pilgrim, and thought it was valid information,my perspective was how much attention trolls receive here for whatever reason, and I thought it said something that a person who never felt the need to comment on anything else here would take the time to point out the negative impact some posters can have.I'm sorry if I dragged you into a shit storm of nonsense, that was not my intention, and I would hope you would continue to post now that you entered the fray, another intelligent opinion is always welcome.

Well, all that weird stuff aside. I know it drove a lot of people off years back.
I remember a post that had a killer list of shows. Someone pasted a bunch of posts together. It was great, had a bunch of top 10's, fave shows by vote and stuff like that. Someone put a good amount of time into it. I'll try and find it later.
This was one of the posts in it and and I remember it being a great reference point.

Re: trolls and such |
FWIW, I too read your Other Ones post with interest. I read and bookmark many more threads than I reply to (and still others I at least skim), just because I am one of the least knowledgeable people here - I know very little other than what I like to listen to ... Of course, often I *don'* ever get back to the thread, but I do often at least click the links and listen to some of the music. Over time, I'm getting educated about the Grateful Dead. A lot goes way over my head, but some bits sink in, too. So posters who write these terrific information-packed posts should not feel bad if there are few responses; some of us just have nothing to say because we know so little we wouldn't know what to ask. I greatly appreciate such threads!
Lately around here it seems an equal mix of really great educational threads and others that are the detritus of somebody's nervous breakdown. (Is it really all one person?) Well, carry on.

I also bookmarked your post. TOO holds a very special place for me -- the iconic Dead song, as I see it -- but I haven't really thought about its evolution (except vaguely and impressionistically), so that'll be interesting to read.
Ya know, I think one reason the troll threads grow (or metastasize) is that it's just so easy to make a quick remark -- in fact, that's part of the fun of coming around here (though not, in my view, in response to trolls, but to each his own) -- whereas a sensible response to a thoughtful post takes more than a nanosecond to formulate. And I think folks are a bit worn-down now, honestly ... I mean, geez, the country's heading over a cliff in a stupid game of chicken, the heat wave has undoubtedly sapped a lot of energy, and then folks check in at this place for a bit of relaxation and get stuck in what I believe SDH called the "retarded tornado." Lovely. Well, so it goes ...
things move in cycles. Or, as TOO would have it, circles.

Ladies(Ring+AR) thanks for your interest in the O1 thread, but I can't stress enough that it wasn't a woe is me type of thing ,just a poorly thought out statement on finding surprise in what subjects appeal to people on a music forum.I will say again that I am all for keeping this place exactly as it is,I would just hold out hope that we get some more people who are interested in having some spirited discussions on the bands music.

Hear, hear!
I really enjoyed your Other One post, but just don't have the time in a work day to give it the attention it deserves. Instead I bookmarked it so I can go back to it at home, when I will have the time to listen to the performances.
I replied to Pilgrim because I wanted to acknowledge the return after a big absence, and to remind him/her that there is still a lot to value here - and a lot of people like me who are sitting out the troll war, but still want to talk about music. Peace.

Re: trolls and such |
Appreciate the sentiment Fenario80,I wasn't looking for folks to comment or check out my thread,I was trying to make a point on what I see as a strange imbalance on a forum supposedly dedicated to discussion of the music of the GD,the point could also be made that it is not an interesting topic to the fine folks here on the forum,or like yourself you are busy and haven't the time to respond. My post was in no way in response to anything you stated in yours.
I understand what your saying WT,I have been coming here for close to 3 years now and enjoy the forum exactly the way it is,I get how it works and have no qualms whatsoever. While I find some less some enjoyable than others,I find no one problematic ,not even the trolls for I don't interact with them.I'm sure the majority of musical questions and topics have been addressed,I think there are enough new people to converse amongst ourselves, and I would hope we were intelligent enough to pose some new and interesting thoughts, while our predecessors might have covered every intelligent thought to be uttered in relation to the GD and their music,I would like a chance to kick it around some with the few people who come to a music forum to discuss music, for I have read and participated
in a number of very interesting and thought provoking threads just recently, and at times far more interesting than what has been passing for discussion here the last year or so.
Once again I was only commenting on a dynamic I see as unusual,I'm certainly not saying anything about how people should comport themselves, have at it people.

You both hit the nail on the head...but, I'd turn it around by noting how few responses most anyone gets on straight up music posts....I stopped posting on the DEAD long ago as it was so damn repetitious. Most of the regulars come to socialize, really. I find troll posts boring, to be sure, but there hasn't been a DEAD post of interest to me in a yr or two...
I know that makes me part of the problem, but I'd just say same old rules apply--take what u like, ignore the rest, cause it ain't gonna change.

Re: trolls and such |
Sorry, but I've gotta back WT here. I don't know about permanently, but there are definitely times I'm not really interested in dissecting this band any more than I already have, and during those times I find myself here just to catch up with the various participants. When I'm not spewing meaningless babble however, I do take time to check out the various recommendations and TJI shows and occasionally find some real treasures I had previously overlooked. I even find myself occasionally responding to the various Trolls from time to time just for the pure comedy factor. The fodder they have provided for some of the best exchanges I've read here truly has no price. But it is truly up to individual choice. I, for one, really don't care what a person elects to post, Dead related or otherwise. If I'm looking for quality information, it is quite easy to pass over the rancid cow patties that are piled thorughout this place. Quality will always shine through.

Re: trolls and such |
So you’ve basically set up shop here to bark down folks when you’re bored (which judging by the frequency of your posts is often), flirt with the fellas and when it comes down to it, through your own admission, contribute jack squat to this GD forum. I really don’t see the difference between how you choose to fill your days and any other number of ‘trolls’. I see you as one and the same - clutter. Why not do us all a favour, give it a rest and catch up with the virtual innuendo crew of ‘regular’s on Facebook, Skype or Messenger instead of continuing to bog down this Forum. Seriously, give it some thought.

Folks - 90% of the trolling that happens around here is the work of one individual. If archive.org admins would be so kind as to step in and ban his IP address, then we could all move on to bigger and better things.

Did not read your original post but I have to agree w/ you all the way here.It seems because it's an open forum that pretty much anything goes. I actually thought this was a Grateful Dead forum and all that surrounds this band and any
splinter bands since. All this bullshit bickering is sometimes from a distance pretty funny but after a while it's just gets old.As some here may know I've ripped the band when when they were horrible and most agree on some nights they were awful and on others they just take you places never heard before in music.

Why look at the glass as half empty? On those nights when the magic was hard to find, it was still there it just takes a little digging to uncover. As Wavy Gravy said at Woodstock, "There's always a little bit of heaven in a disaster area.".

Re: trolls and such |
I believe the fanatics used to those the slow shows. Slow there's nothing there, unwanted feedback, constantly trying to keep in tune, ridiculous banter and not just getting it together. Look ballads belong w/ the rest of the show as a mix that usually comes to some sort of climax. On the so called
slow show they would end w/ a very loud and rockin JBG as a
tease, see if were in the mood we could do it. I pay for tickets to be entertained not to be bummed out. If it 's a free gig or a benifit well your a professional musician so produce or try coal mining or better yet roping horses things they can really relate to.The really bad shows I'v
seen were not salvagable and the scene ,well I can watch a girl in a peasant dress twerl 20 times and that's enough for me.Then you have the nights that are just magic. There's
a flow when all is aligned all the gear is right the sets make sence and then they take to that place music has never taken you before. That's the difference between a so called slow show and an ass kicker as voices are on and the playing
is as fluid as mercury.
