Did Jerry drink? If so, what? |
Just curious... I know that he wasn't s teetotaler, but for all the drugs associated with Jerry Garcia, I rarely hear anyone mention alcohol. Did he have a favorite drink? Beer? Kind of wine?

Don't have a real answer, but the movie Festival Express documents that there was a lot of alcohol consumed in the '70 tour of Canada.

I've seen that picture of him with the huge wine glass circa late 70's or whenever that was. It was red that's all I know.
I have a hard time believing he didn't at least drink wine and or beer. And most of us know Bob drinks the shit out of scotch.

Don't know if he drank but seeing that he used heroin for so long I doubt he drank heavily. Opiates and booze don't mix very well. You either hug the porcelain throne all night or possibly don't wake up.
He probably drank a few drinks here and there socially just like most other people and when he wanted to get really high he took drugs.

Chicago Auditorium Theatre 06/28/76 |
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1976-06-28.sbd.digitalrbb.miller.112296.flac16Who hasn't? and wtf business is that of yours?
Ok, so i'm diggin on this Chicago Auditorium Theatre 06/28/76 Cassidy > Looks Like Rain > Lazy Lightnin > Supplication > High Time > Music Never Stopped > Eyes > Happiness > Wharfer, etc.
Weir, Keith & Donna, Jerry, Phil, Bill & Mickey all giving it their best and stumble across this totally lame post and have to ask; what's next? what color was Jerry's poo?
I believe the more appropriate question is why this band played so fucking well in & around Chicago Land in the 70's?

That-a boy Bobby!
Interesting topic, Pigpen's love for the drink was well documented (obviously), but I have always wondered about the others.

Re: Did Jerry drink? If so, what? |
Pretty sure that it is well documented that Jerry was not much of a drinker. He didn't care for it. Wasn't against it, but wasn't personally a proponent either.
Can't say that I was aware that Bob is/was a big scotch drinker.
Phil on the other hand, openly admits in his book that he was pretty much of a lush from the mid to late 70s thru the early 80s. He apparently became somewhat of a wine snob in the band's later days also. Not sure if he drinks these days since receiving the new liver.

I've heard many stories, one of which Hagar tells in his auto biography which is funny except for him sending Bob away to drive home wasted drunk. Granted he probably lives half a mile away and it was at a time where no one would probably be up and around but still..... of course we've all done the same pretty much on both sides I'm sure

Re: Did Jerry drink? If so, what? |
Geez I hope not. What Phil says in his book is that when he was getting ready to be a dad ('86), he cut his drinking down to "the level of wine with dinner" (level unspecified) and quit completely when he was diagnosed with hepatitis in, I think, '90, which was "quite a bit harder."
I think he's talked about how even if you have a new liver, if you've had hepatitis, you can't drink ... which hopefully he'd choose not to do anyway.

As a child, he was known to drink a lot of Vitamin D whole milk. I believe Gans devoted an entire show to this topic...

Good one smart ass! I think it was in that Greenfeild book ( which is probably my favorite Garcia book because it doesnt trash him or kiss his ass )or maybe another Garcia story where the interviewer says Jerry sends out for lunch and what arives is this really nasty tough thin steak. I hope he had better taste in his booze than he did in his lunches

synchronicity. I just did yesterday or the day before and am listening now. I couldn't before because I didn't have the right flash player but they have a different one now. Part of me wished I hadn't because I want so freakin bad to go see them for those two nights as the Ryman. If it wasn't the dillema of finding a sitter for our 8mo believe me I'd seriously be considering it.
I'll email you on the other

Ah, but what's in the can? And did he open it himself?
His favorite drink was electric kool-aid, of course ... though later on, given his taste in food, it was probably straight kool-aid.
