Yes, that's a very exuberant Wave That Flag. Beautiful Box of Rain, too.
I was inclined to skip Big River, but I'm glad I didn't. I'm gonna sit right here until I die!!

Re: Boston April 2 , 1973 |
This show has some stand out moments in a year packed with standout moments. The first set has a good Jack Straw,a Deal with some hot Keith and really good versions of Brown Eyed and Playin'.
The second set offers up good takes on El Paso,Stella Blue and Sugar Mag and they rip up Greatest Story and Loose Lucy, which if you listen closely contains an unusually enthusiastic Jerry vocal. The highlight of the show is the jam after a fine version of Here Comes Sunshine,at about 13:00 the band falls into a soft, jazzy space with the guitars and piano weaving,Keith plays some beautiful rippling runs as the music picks up steam into a hard swirling space with Jerry and Weir just shredding to the 18:00 minute mark when they start some assaultive bending, scratching string abuse to a mellow feedback outro, only to pull off a flawless gizinta Bobby McGee.After an extraordinary Eyes we get a really nice China Doll with a killer Jerry falsetto at about 3:45 on the "take up your China Doll" verse followed by a very rare strong full band vocal blend, just really sweet.

You Ain't Woman Enough is really just a little throwaway song, right? but this one is a treat. Jerry is having such fun. Donna is laughing at one point. It's a little party all by itself :)

Yeah Ring,I always liked Donna's take on You Ain't Woman Enough and Tomorrow is Forever and wondered why the band didn't offer her a slot nightly to cover a country or r&b song, especially in 73'-74' when they were doing so many songs.

I agree. She had her moments. She needed a sock stuffed down her throat during Playin', and occasionally during Scarlet Begonias. But she could have been encouraged to do more of the things she did well.

And don't forget an extra sock for Greatest Story Ever Told.

Lol. My mother always told us when she was in school, the teachers told her to just move her lips, please don't sing. Maybe they could have told Donna to just move her lips during some songs.
