Forum: texts Subject: which date is appropriate?

For patents, which year should I fill in the "year" field of the metadata? For example,
archive.org/details/UnitedStatesPatent600150
this patent was issued in 1898 but filed in 1897. Is the appropriate year 1898 or 1897? Hoping for help.

Andrew,

I would say date of issue and then the other date can be listed in the description with explanation.
