In 1947 United World Films, a subsidiary of Universal films, purchased Castle Films. Universal operated Castle Films under their United World Films umbrella until 1978 and then renames it Universal 8 & 16. Did Universal's donation include film or newsreels put out by Capital. We're developing an exhibition and are unclear whether footage we acquired in 1947 of the film "Eruption of Vesuvius, 1944" would be in the public domain.

Castle Films were not included in the newsreel donation to NARA. However, it may be that the specific film is in the public domain, as many Castles are.

If so many of the Castle Films are PD then where are they and why aren't they out here. I have a Castle Musicals (1940-1949) and some other films that I know are in the PD but I have no clue how to upload them to the Archive, which I would very much like to do. Currently everything I have is on 16mm film, but making the transfer first to Digital-S and then to the computer is not going to be difficult for me.
