Harder They Come |
I got to this wonderful JGB show with Clarence Clemmons, 9-13-89, and just listend to an outstanding HTC, it might very well be my favourite uptempo JGB tune and I have many best versions of all eras but this is way up there.So if you have that show and want to go back - it's a great listen and well worth every one of those 12 minutes.

It's not the massively long take like soooo many great versions out there, but I have a special place for the first live version (I think it's the first anyway), the one on the Keystone Live album.

Actually I should correct myself, the first known performance is from 7/10/73, but I the version on the Keystone album is from the following night. So technically it's the second known performance. Both shows are excellent and worth obtaining.
Either way, you're hard pressed to find a "bad" performance of the tune, no matter the year or arrangement. Personally I'm most partial to the 72-75 era Garcia bands. I like stuff from 76-81 or 82, but the Merl era will always be my favorite. Just yesterday was the anniversary of his death. RIP, Merl.

The song's author Jimmy Cliff opened and also plays with Jerry during The Harder They Come.
Don't have access to my version at the moment but I recall it to have been respectable...

Definitely one of my favorite songs that Jerry covers, so many great versions, with 2/9/74 being right up there near the top, at least for a wonderful example from those early years w/Merl. I'll be checking out your suggestion for sure, don't think i've heard that version w/CC just yet. Thanks. By the way, what do you think, overall, of the shows Jerry did with Clarence Clemens?

I have to go back to 2-9-74 - I do really like CC playing with Jerry, another awesome show is 9-10-89. You know I used to not like, almost couldn't stand sax at all, back in the early days, late 60s/70s, it was just and mainly guitars for me but slowly I learned to appreciate what a saxophone could add. Also the Branford/GD shows I do like a lot. So everything I've heard of Jerry/CC I loved to hear. Thanks for replying.

I pretty much agree with your take on the Sax, nothing against the instrument, just never really loved it with a more Rock 'n' Roll style of music. One exception, or should i say, one great exception, is the band Morphine, a power trio with bass (Mark Sandman), drums (Billy Conway), and sax (Dana Colley), and no guitar, yet it works.
Anytime you want to recommend a Jerry tune, it's very welcome ... any recent favorites of 'Don't Let Go'?? I think the 6/11/82 version quite fine, but sadly i don't do well with keeping up-to-date lists.
And even though the skies are grey, i'm actually about to head out to a nearby trail for some biking!

Oh, it defn looks interesting, and of course, some I already know well enough to be mighty happy about. Kids often know more about some of the newer stuff, so they'll love finding out what's "nonDEAD/nonCREAM" that's for sure! They burned out on the latter alot sooner than me, as expected of course...
The family ALL know it's a good day when a "TA" package arrives!

I haven't thought of Morphine in years . You just started me on a youtube quest . Memories ...
So how many of these bands are you and ..
Like Cobain , Sandman was another artist with a ton of potential , and some already realized , that died young .

Listening to 2-9-74 now, thanks and you're right about that version! I have to say I'm not a real Don't Let Go fan so unfortunately I can't say anything for now but I'll try to be more open to that one...!

2-24-80 always puts a smile on my face. Nothing really special happens until about half way through Jerry's 2nd solo when out of nowhere he just explodes with the coolest guitar riff. One of my favorite Jerry moments.

Haven't heard many versions myself, but always been fond of 1975-04-19 (LOM). How well does that version hold up against your list?
