Inappropriate "Reviews" & How to Remove them? |
Two hours into October 20 th, here in So California, I find this poster NoMoreFat has posted over 300 reviews which are directly advertising and off site links to his personal website and he and the software that allows this mass spamming needs to be stopped. An example is the following, clicking on his name you can find the 7 pages of 50 items per page that he has spammed today, October 20th (so far). There used to be a "report this item" button on pages which is no longer there. It is obvious that reviews are not being reviewed which allows this type of behavior. This needs to be addressed immediately or every book will have this same "review".!

Re: Inappropriate 'Reviews' & How to Remove them? |
Simple solution here. Do not allow internal links in the reviews. Seems like there are always enough of these poor excuses for humans going around. Notice that he provides no contact information on his web site.

Be careful following truncated links. It's a common way to direct people to malicious sites. You can examine the link first on LongURL.org, and based on the redirects, the links provided by NoMoreFat look very risky.

Re: Inappropriate 'Reviews' & How to Remove them? |
Cocky little poster - he has gone back in on the linked IA book above and deleted NoMore Fat's posting and now posted same spam using a new name of "enjoy your health".
This seems to be an enduring problem for IA and perhaps we need REPORT button so individually as we see these spammers reviews, we can delete them as such, and they won't know to go back and respam the same item again?
This new name doesn't have many spammed items yet. Probably alseep now in foreign country.

Re: Inappropriate 'Reviews' & How to Remove them? |
That's been suggested before. The problem with it that some people get click-happy and "report" anything they don't like, and admins don't always take the time to review what they are removing. On one site I frequently post at the rule is "five clicks and it's gone," with no explanation. I've had several posts removed under that rule.

Re: Inappropriate 'Reviews' & How to Remove them? |
I'm referring to a fairly popular news site (seattletimes.com), and they're dealing with thousands of posts daily. I don't agree with their rule, but they aren't really obligated to run their site democratically. I have to admit, it
is fairly effective against spam. I don't know that the trade-off is worth it.

The trade off is definitely not worth it .
It seems like a packaged deal ; near complete freedom of lawful speech , with the spammers and trolls . I wish it could be another way .

Re: Inappropriate 'Reviews' & How to Remove them? |
Well it looks like he went in and deleted his spamming, Gerry. It seems you have a certain amount of time after typing a review, to go back and edit it and thereby deleting it if you wish. I don't know what amount of time is given for the editing process as some of my earlier reviews certainly could have used some editing!
But by deleting the review, they make us look like idiots (so they think) until they then repost it again.

Re: Inappropriate 'Reviews' & How to Remove them? |
Maureen,
They are gone. May be someone threatened to hack his site.
hehehe, after all he was easy to locate. With a little work almost everyone can be found even when they use redirects.
They will always be popping up though, like parasites in swine.
