I think I've heard the best of 1984, and although some of it is on the better side of mediocre, it's pretty silly to try to compare it with anything from 1968. i'm tempted to say that anyone who honestly prefers 1984 over 1968 either hasn't listened to the earlier years at all, or is completely insane. but i would never say anything that bold :)

In general, I prefer GD over much of anything else for the bulk of my listening. Because of that, I have to move around in eras in order to not get bored. Listening to '68 all the time would make me cross-eyed - it's just too psychedelic for my brain to handle on a regular basis, though I definitely need a blast of that acid rock every now and then. I need variety in my set lists as well. For example today has had me listening to '84 Hampton (thanks Longnstrange!), '68 Fillmore (thanks Cliff!), and '86 Cal Expo (thanks Rich!).

I wish I knew. My parents thought that I was insane at the time. Now I'm mortified at the time and money that I wasted shlepping to toilets like Hampton, VA and Harrisburg, PA to see Jer nod off while the band mailed in another aweful performance...

I guess 10/18 might be the least offensive of the seventeen shows I attended during 1984, but I would not consider it a good performance by any long stretch of imagination.
Remember folks; just because you enjoyed yourselves in the parking lot prior to the show doesnt change the fact that Jer was debilitated by Persian and was unable to hold his own head up while he was on stage...
