Good call Ice9.
Although, i am partial to the 5/6 show. Really like the pre drums part of the 2nd set!

Cool. We'll see how set II of 5/7 turns out. Right now Bobby's falsetto in Picasso is cracking me the F up. If you haven't heard it, give it a listen. Very, very funny Bobby moments in that one.

Re: Frost '89 (in memory of Brent) |
Maybe this is weird, but I think one of the issues I've had with Brent over the years is that his singing will never, ever crack you up. He's just so ... professional!
Jerry and Bob are guys who sing. (Jerry, often heartbreakingly beautifully so, but not slickly.) Pig is a blues guy who always sounds like he just put down the whiskey bottle. Phil is Phil. Brent sounds like ... a real singer. Which is great, but also a bit in the "which of these is not like the others" category.
I don't say that to rag on Brent in any way, because I do appreciate what he brought to the band, including his singing. I enjoy it, and yet I'm ambivalent about it, if that makes any sense!

Re: Frost '89 (in memory of Brent) |
I see what you mean when it comes to Brent's actual singing. His handling of lyrics, on the other hand, can get very unprofessional. Unlike Jerry (who just mumbles on through it until he comes to a part he remembers), Brent will literally stop singing when he forgets the lyrics. Instead, he just goes "haaAAAH!" or "ooooooohhhhh!" and then maybe he'll take a quick solo. Check out Just a Little Light from 5/6/89 or We Can Run from 10/23/89 Charlotte. Funny for a second, then quite sad.

Re: Frost '89 (in memory of Brent) |
God Bless Clifton Hanger's troubled soul: Brent is the only missing man that brings a tear out of nowhere when listening to the Dead of his era. I enjoy listening to the Frost '89. It was my 1st time getting a digSBD>my VHS HiFi 'right after' (~next week after) the shows>Thanks Mr Deal, Stanford alumnus.
Charlotte 10.23.89 was my second of only 2 front row adventures with our Boys(the other being at least set II of 6.30.85). The aforementioned Brent vocal flub in 'We can Run' was my single most painful Deadshow moment.
On the other hand, check out the Brent verse & scat in Rooster (& his jamming in 2nd half of Space & the first half of The Other One Space)of this Duke '82 show
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1982-04-02.sbd.tetzeli.clugston-fix.34846.sbeok.shnfI wish there was an audience recording of this show on IA- My copy is 'misplaced;' should I find it, it will be duly forwarded to those best able to transfer. The China>Rider & Whistle-start Truckin' & THE OTHER ONE come time mind as particular highlights of the Cameron Audience Sound.

(for Brent by Jack)
He lived out on the edge,
he died in the same old vein,
Bungee jumped-no net-again,
Clif Hanger off a ledge
Bamboo splints or sugar'd 'caine,
Fightin' life-no one can win,
Thru the fence thru the hedge
just find one more soldier slain,
Victim of his next of kin.

Well, Jack, we may have been next to each other then! I'm not sure, but I used to be really good at getting to the front, and I'm fairly sure I got to the front unofficially at that show ... and, if you think you were there "for at least set II," maybe you were there unofficially, too :-)
