Boy, I couldn't agree more about Dave Davies. He was so interesting in the late 60's/early 70's - right up until Schoolboys or Sleepwalker, if you ask me (which I know you didn't). Arthur is my favorite Dave album, because he is so all over the place (Australia!).
Interesting that you brought him into this particular thread, too, because the Kinks also toured with horns in '73, an odd coincidence that I enjoy pointing out every once in a while.

It is hard to pick a favorite, all those albums from 66-71 ( maybe with the exception of "Lola vs Powerman" and the "Percy" soundtrack ) are masterpieces .
Relevant to the "horns" thread, I especially love "Muswell Hillbillies" .
The Kinks are probably the most underrated of the great bands .
