New Speedway |
I've been listening to a lot of 1970 shows of late and have rediscovered how much I love New Speedway Boogie. I'm wondering if anyone knows why the band retired the song after 1970 only to bring it back to life in 1991. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Hunter wrote it in reaction to what had happened at Altamont in 1969 and, therefore, it got stale after '70? But then why bring it back in '91? Anyone have some insight?

Re: New Speedway |
you are correct sir.
It was pretty hit or miss at the beginning of 91.
The versions got somewhat better, but will never match the
luster of the early years.
But I won't dominate the rap Jack...

Re: New Speedway |
Do enjoy this Cap Centre version that I missed. Thx. Its funny, I was relocating to Annapolis at this same time.
Saw the majority of Dead shows @ The CAP , but missed this one.
Saw many good shows there, but had hated the venue. The heads were nice as always though: I was getting in my
truck after a show there (prolly 92) and some guy following
says " hey! you need this bag man?!?"
I told him "no, I'm good..."
Then I realize he offering the bag that fell outta my own
pocket a few yards back... Now thats a good man...
One man gathers what another man spills
anyway~
This one I feel was a big and juicy one from that year:
check it; just pre-drums:

Ha! no Ripple ever for me...
First breakout since 81?!?! wow
That sounds like a sad, sad story... that makes me chuckle too. Listening to it right now. Not too shabby.
Goes to show, you don't ever know...
And THAT is why I never left a show early

That's a nice one! I like all the summer/fall 70 ones that come with the "acoustic/semi-acoustic/pseudo-acoustic/demi-electric" sets (to use Bob's phrasing).

Re: New Speedway |
I always thought the revived versions, from 91 > all the post Jerry bands, seems too jaunty, and bouncy considering the subject matter . I agree with what has been said ( WT ) about the "demi electric " versions from mid-late 70 . I like that "snaky" feel ( as Phil says of the one he put on the "Phil Zone" ).
But, this still leaves your question, of why they discontinued it in the first place .

Re: New Speedway |
I was in the building for the sound check of New Speedway in 1991. I was just 20 and my show-mates were much older and did not believe my claim. "You mean 'One way or another??' that song??". "No way".
Sure enough.
But that does not compare to my friend who called the HCSS breakout in a Tempe Motel 6 full of touring heads. The snickering was appropriate until the show opener was HCSS. Then Chris was on top of the world.
It was a freakin' deluge on the drive from Cali to AZ.
