Anyone ever notice fireworks from the audience? |
I've spent my day lolling around in Floyd's 1977 "In the Flesh" tour and one thing I have noticed is a lot of fireworks going off. Especially, in MSG. Granted, it is July 4th but you can hear them at Soldier Field and some other venues, too. Apparently, it was a big deal to Waters who calls one obnoxious fan a "shitbag".
I don't think I have ever heard fireworks from any Heads in all the shows I have listened to on the Archive. Can anyone confirm or disabuse me of my belief?
Which kind of brings up another question for you, ahem, more mature heads: how much overlapping in 77 would there have been between Heads and PF fans? Do you folks buy DSOM or Wish You Were Here when they first came out?

i bought dsotm on day 1. was disappointed at fist, but grew to like it. got wywh some months after its release (due to the circumstances)
seen floyd when they first started playing w/ fire > 73-05-19
its a big indoors venue. a large model airplane on fire flew blazing over our heads and crashed exploding behind the band. then the gong went ablaze. shiiit, good times

its ezy. convert wma to wav, slice it into tracks or into single pieces that fit the discs (>80min files > 1 cd = 1 file) and burn it
u can also get this mighty fine aud in mp3 @ g101...

I think the 3/9/81 show has what sounds like some pretty substantial fireworks going off (M 80's perhaps) - enough to throw the boys off the beat a little.

I used to have an old aud tape of Saratoga in '85 where you could hear bottle rockets being shot at the guy hanging from the balcony right before Stagger Lee. Don't hear them on the SBD copies of the show I have now. Have to dig out the tape.
I went to that show and am fairly sure I saw the bottle rockets too.
As for Pink Floyd. Before I bought a Dead album, had DSOTM, WYWH and Animals on album, 8 track for the car, and were the first CD's I ever bought way back in the 80's. And have yet to see them live...

I had The Wall on 8-track and listened to it every afternoon while rolling my newspapers.
I also had a K-tel 8-track that had truckin' surrounded by America and Black Sabbath.

I listened to it. But, I think it is Cliff Hucker farting in disgust at being at a show in the 80's. Did you actually see the bottle rockets?

It's interesting that the other two 'firecracker shows' mentioned so far were from summer '74...because the first one that came to my mind was another one, 6-30-74 - in fact, there's even a separate 'firecrackers' track on this copy:

There must be other shows as well (some July 4 shows, I'm sure), though I can't think of one right now.

As far as a mingling of Floyd/Dead audiences, I'd guess they had the most in common pre-'72, when the Floyd were still something of an underground 'head' band, playing spacy psychedelic music to quietly stoned audiences. After Dark Side, they had that rowdy mass audience that the Dead didn't get til after '87.
It's quite likely some of those late-'70s fans would slip off to Dead shows as well, despite their too-cool new-Floydian friends making fun of them...

Ah--shoulda mentioned, I never did attend a 4 July concert, so perhaps a "duh" is order for my post...
Also, your mentioning of PF fans vs DEAD fans is something I can attest to, in HS & College (for me, mid 70s). There was a defn distinction--I don't recall any of us "long time HEADs" liking the current direction PF was taking, though a few of us would bring up the first two PF albums with affection in "debates"...the PF fans of the time, though, often hardly knew Syd had existed, and DSOTMoon and then Animals/Wall, were all they talked about...they defn looked "down" on us as realy "has beens" and this led to many heated debate with us HEADs looking like the real oddballs, out of touch with current greatness, etc.
The same dynamic to a lesser degree occurred with LedZ, in that some of us liked the first album, but the current fans thought it all started with StwayHeav, and that again, we were completely out of touch with good music of the day...
I can still recall the great laughs we would have when the HS DEAD cover band I was involved in would play "partials" of StairwtoHeav for a sound check, or Money (PF), as a joke, but would later find out it really pissed off the true fans of those bands when all they--my friends in the band--ended up playing was DEAD/NRPS/Byrds etc...

Could be. They said he got pissed at a fan in Toronto and that's where the idea for The Wall came from. (Man, how fucking on the edge do you have to be that Canadians can piss you off?)

In "The Grateful Dead Movie" I remember seeing some guy doing what appears to be some kind of home made pyrotechnics and you can hear some of them but that might have just been the mic on the camera

74-82: I can say with almost absolute certainty that I never heard ANY such fireworks (Winterland, Oak Col, outside venues [GGPk, etc.]). There was a great deal of smoke, and drinking, and other such activities, but nothing of sort you ask about...nor, now that I think of it, did I ever see a gun or a knife (not sure why firecrackers made me think of that, but in case you imagined that was the explanation for the "bam!" you just heard).
West Coast only? How bout the NYorkers? Down and dirty? Fearing for your life? JK, but let me know if the stereo type ever manifested itself...

It was downright scary in the parking lot of Foxboro 4th of July 87. Still I don't recall any fireworks in the show.
Also I think I recall random fireworks going off either in the back of the speedway or out in the parking lot during the 2nd & 3rd of July 88 Oxford Me. shows.

Funny that you make such a distinction: "West Coast only". It does appear that the more "aggressive" towns have more fireworks. In fact, it is said that Floyd a rare "Careful with that Axe, Eugene" encore in Oakland because the had been "so well-behaved."
Alright, NYorkers: were fireworks common at concerts in the 70's?
