what item, what search string (aside from date range).

we have at least 8 kinds of dates in our metadata,
and not all the date searches work the same way.

Sorry about the delay in replying.

This is best illustrated by example. We want to find all the radio broadcasts (audio) of D-Day [1944-06-06] that Internet Archive holds wherever they may be stored.

The search criteria are as follows (only altered fields are shown):

Any field: D-Day

AND Collection: is All Collections

AND Mediatype: is All Mediatypes

AND Date range: 1944-01-01 TO 1944-12-31 [All of 1944]

RESULTS:
--------

It finds:

1. [audio] Complete Broadcast Day D-Day
http://www.archive.org/details/Complete_Broadcast_Day_D-Day

2. [audio] CBS D-Day Broadcast
http://www.archive.org/details/otr_cbsddaybroadcast

3. [audio] D-Day Broadcast-CBS-Bob Trout - CBS Radio
http://www.archive.org/details/D-dayBroadcast-cbs-bobTrout

...But it does NOT find:

4. [audio] Complete Broadcast D-Day NBC
http://www.archive.org/details/NBCCompleteBroadcastDDay

All four are a part of 'Old Time Radio'. I have found that this type of search failure is quite common. Incidentally, Google finds the 'lost' item easily. It's why I now use Google to cross check the search (but this best works when you already know what you are looking for).

Here is another instance:

Any field: brewster kahle [also 'Brewster Kahle' u/case was tried]

AND Collection: is All Collections

AND Mediatype: is All Mediatypes

AND Date range: 2010-01-01 TO 2010-03-03

...And the search did NOT find:

"Brewster Kahle Interview with Daniel Erasmus 2-2010 - Daniel Erasmus of Digital Thinking Network
Daniel Erasmus runs the Digital Thinking Network, a creative thinktank. Here he interviews Brewster Kahle of the Internet Archive on the next 10 years of the Internet. Video to follow.
Keywords: Brewster Kahle"

http://www.archive.org/details/BrewsterKahleInterviewWithDanielErasmus2-2010

Note: the search was then extended down by one year [2009-01-01] and one instance was found but is was not the missing item.

The attached files are print screens of the search.

Best regards,

gw

we have multiple dates in our system.

in the example item you mention, it's field isnt even filled out.

try using "oai_updatedate" in the pulldown field instead -- that "snowballs" a bunch of the dates together and thus will search multiple date fields in an item..
