"This is the only show from the 80's that doesnt make me nauseous..."
Shows after 1968 are ridiculous and make me want to self-medicate.

Well, actually, if you were a little more open minded, perhaps you could make it to 71 with just a little bit of non-prescription assistance...I know I can; but, good to see 68 get its due.

Re: Eighties |
1981 was their best 80's year IMO.
Start with 5/1/81 which has an excellent AUD at this very site and go from there.
For '82 check out 4/3/82 and for '83 check out the Hartford Oct. shows and for '84 go directly to 10/12/84, the best show of that year.
From '85-'88 I can't say anything stands out but in '89 they re-gathered their greatness...go to the July Alpine Valley shows and rejoice (7/17-19/89)

Re: Eighties |
Hey Grendel--assume you knew I was being sarcastic to the sarcastic (I assume too)! But hey, seriously--isn't 77-78 your fav time period? Do I have that wrong? I was thinking of SDH as the 79-82 guy...
For what it's worth, I did see them then--but only a few times in 81...nothing like the number in 77 and 78 that the two of us have spoken of a few times before.
So, hope the health recovery biz is going as well as can be expected for you; I wish it weren't the number one priority of each and everyday I wake up and log on here, but as my old man always said, "it beats the Hell out of the alternative!" (ie, dying, NOT not loggiing on!).

Re: Eighties |
Yes I was being sarcastic. Personally I hated the early organ and could hardly see beyond the quaint toyness until Two from the Vault.
I have a friend that seems afraid to listen after 1977, for fear of being taken over by Jerry's dark passenger I think. I love the Brent years and beyond, even if was formulaic and passionless a third of the time.
Why dismiss a popular period outright and alienate half the fans?

Re: Eighties |
I knew that; was just joking myself...I am sure it gets old to hear about my early era bias, but I don't think I alienate anyone by my biases...at least I hope not; I think even the newbies catch on that my ranting and raving about early era stuff is all in good fun. But of course, you and I would defend anyone's right to defend what they like for whatever reasons they have, given the subjective nature of it all. I certainly have no problem with the folks that only like the 80s, or whatever it might be.
And, I defn hear you about the organ biz early on!

Re: Eighties |
No it wasn't you that seemed to be at the epicenter of the bad trip forum embroil last week.
I was trying to point out, lamely though, the connection of someone who won't listen to newer shows complaining about a forum filled with 80-90s fans.
I'll still listen to newer shows, like 9-12-85 Kaiser just today, and like it. Even though I belated concluded that 68-69 was great and 72-74 are unbeatable, many ballads are as good -- & poignantly aged -- in the 80s-90s as any time.

Hey Grendel--assume you know the difference between one post and a dumbass dumble (hmmm...will leave that "double" + "dumb" typo!) post!
My bad...

Re: Eighties |
Breathe easy, my friend. All is well ;-)
I was sincere about my 80's post...no question my favorite Dead year is 1977 by a LONG shot, but I still recognize there are fine shows to be found in any era (save '93-95)...so I was just pointing out that if you're looking specifically for an 80's show, I would delve into 1981 first and etc. etc., as I mentioned.
To me, the "golden road" of the Dead's peak years is still 1972-1977.
Next best: 1978-1983, followed by 1989-90, and then 1984 solo.
My pick for worst stretches is 1985-88, and of course '93-95.
Your preferred years of 1966-1970 or so--to me--fall in about the same realm as '78-'83....they probably were a better band in terms of energy in those early years, but I prefer the later 'sound" of the 70's as opposed to that distinctive acid-rock sound of the late 60's (of course, Pig was a huge plus in those years and his contribution can't be glossed over...he was one of a kind.)
As for the recovery, slow but steady. I'm impatient...gotta remember my body's been thru a big trauma and it's been less then 4 weeks since surgery so i have to try to remain patient (easier said than done!)

Re: Eighties |
I know the feeling on the "patience/patient" front! Assume you lined up some good books, and of course, good music for the down time...and be sure to start back slow and steady with rehab/resumption of exercise and the like; don't overdo it, as will be your inclination I am sure...I have always discovered a second or even third "weak link" when recovering from one injury/surg procedure (ie, post knee, the back acts up; post back, the hip; do I sound as old as I feel?)...and, forgetting your age for the moment, take the advice of my orthopedic surgeon: "Tell, since your contract in that city league wasn't picked up for more than $100k, I think it's time to give up on basketball for your recreational excercise" (toughest thing a doctor ever told me to do...I was impressed that he joked about the contract biz knowing how much I wanted/needed to be able to play ball again).

Re: Eighties |
"tell" me about it!
I played in a senior mens' baseball league 2 summers ago and had the time of my life (even tho' I could barely make it to first on a hard hit single to the outfield). Now I've got to wait at least a year before even thinking of trying that again.
Reading material has been a plus, though. I finally had the time to do something I always wanted to, which is to really actually read and finish one of the "classics", and to my delight, i have been totally enthralled with "The Idiot", by Dostoevsky. One of the greatest books I've ever read.
As for music, it's been a ton of JGB stuff...love the new "Let it Rock" release.
