Still more copyrighted stuff |
I've checked the "this just in" box in Open Source a couple of times in the last hour and I keep finding even more copyrighted material. "90210"? "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"? Come on! No way is this stuff PD.

Re: Still more copyrighted stuff |
A lot of people have no respect for copyrights, that much is clear, and when it is brought to their attention, they either act dumb or get angry. Many people feel entitled to getting something for nothing, and proceed accordingly.

I still haven't received a response from IA but I really don't expect to.
I'll give them some more time before I start drawing conclusions.

I've posted alerts in the Feature Films and Open Source forums, if for no other purpose than to raise awareness.

Methinks everyone at the Archive is asleep or gone...they just forgot to turn out the lights and pull the plug.

Re: Still more copyrighted stuff |
I noticed this person had uploaded an episode of the Showtime TV series "Dexter", being Viacom I am surprised they haven't already contacted this site but if the people who run this site have "vanished".well....
The subject of uploading copyright material...I am surprised the big guys ( Viacom, Dick Clark, Disney, NBC etc...) doesn't follow the footsteps of Baltimore's WBFF-TV when it comes to uploaded copyright material. What WBFF does when their stuff pops up on You Tube, not only do they contact You Tube BUT they also contact the person who did the actual uploading of the clip with a warning telling them the next time..the fines will come out of THEIR pocketbook. Now whehter or not WBFF will actually sue, i don't know but the scare alone will make many people to think twice.

@Viacom
it maybe up to them since "The Internet Archive follows the Oakland Archive Policy for Managing Removal Requests And Preserving Archival Integrity. "

The Archive is also on Symantec's list of unsafe sites
because there are a couple of nasty programs attached to
some items.
When the admin doesn't pay attention to what's going on
it really can get nasty in a hurry.
I wonder if someone at EFF knows how to get hold of
Brewster to give him a heads up on this stuff.

Re: Still more copyrighted stuff |
Hiya Sir John, Isnt that policy aimed more at websites/pages/content? Shouldn't IA also follow their own TOS policy as well?
"Copyright Policy
10 March 2001
The Internet Archive respects the intellectual property rights and other proprietary rights of others. The Internet Archive may, in appropriate circumstances and at its discretion, remove certain content or disable access to content that appears to infringe the copyright or other intellectual property rights of others."
OR its FAQ
"How can I add my music, movies, or text?
You may contribute content to the Internet Archive if it's in the public domain or if you own the rights to it."
What you seem to be saying is that as long as Viacom hasnt noticed this yet is ok to be here? Some of these 2009 Movies have garnered 2000+ downloads in the past ten days. I do not understand the thought process that allows this blatant piracy to run unchecked on this site now. I am certain neither streamfreak.org or dardarkom.com owns any rights to the movies/tv episodes they are uploading here.

Re: Still more copyrighted stuff |
I read the link.
As far as one claiming copyright and getting something removed..one thing this a lot of people either overlook or simply don't know is that in some cases "gentlemen's agreement" applies. Not sure if its the case with the big guys ( example Disney getting Warner Brothers stuff taken off ) but in some local TV markets it is the case.
Some months back I was considering about uploading a film on this site of KFEL-TV ( KWGN ) Denver's channel 2 first broadcast. After checking out some other sites, I discovered that some years back this "gentlemens agreement" was in effect in the Denver TV market. In other words had I uploaded that clip not only could KWGN demand the clip be taken down but so could the other TV stations in Denver, even those who have nothing to do with KWGN ( the former KFEL )..and living in Virginia I have better things to do with my time than calling up every TV station in Denver and asking for permission to upload a 10 minute clip. It wouldn't have been worth it.
