Coincidence? (dead-related) |
was just noticing on bt.etree a recently played Los Lobos show and i couldn't help but wonder if this was a simple coincidence or if they knew exactly what they were doing.
On 9-18-09 The Wolves (as JOTS likes to call them) played an encore of La Bamba>Good Lovin'> La Bamba. Kinda sounds a bit like what the Dead played on 9-18-87 after Direwolf's favorite Morning Dew, no?
Coincidence or not I thought it was pretty cool and am looking forward to giving it a listen.

Hey how did the ride go?
Also going to see RRE at the Variety Playhouse on 10/3. Anything I should know about the place? General admission show. Tix still available if you are interested.

The Ride went well, thanks. Raised some money without the muscle cramping from last year. I want to ride the 100 mile option next year, but was not in shape for it this time.
The missus and I do have tickets for RRE. We'll wear ear plugs. It's generally a good venue, with room to dance and squish up front, and theater style seating in the back on the floor. The sides have some tables with chairs, but will get crowded. The balcony has more theater seates that tend to be a little less chaotic.
Good beer selection... we like to try to come down and eat dinner in the vicinity most times before the show, but we may be struggling to get to the show on time then.
I have a course to attend this weekend, so I;m basically working every day until the show. I'll be ready to blow off some steam!

News Flash: "Forum's elbow designated official 'tangible evidence' for rare public appearance. The good intentions went horribly wrong when both participants insisted on communicating exclusively with portable keyboards and obviously fedup spouses alternately beat them senseless with backup power packs they had been forced to carry for their obsessed hubbies as backpacks."

I wonder if our wives think we're less insane when they hear us with another otherwise intelligent person blather on about the band. Seeing that we're not the only ones you know? Makes it seem slightly less crazy.
Hope the visit goes well.

Not a chance for my wife. Hell, she rolled her eyes when the guy that is helping me curate my upcoming "art of rock" show (aptly named, huh?) went off on the events at playboy after dark and details of europe 72 shows. I love hearing his stories and she'd just as soon watch paint dry (which she can do at the gallery).

I thought about you when I wrote that. Hard for me to believe you can't find one shred of Dead ( no rhyme intended ) that she can understand. So are you talking about Rock himself? Straight from the horses mouth then? If so, have his stories got any less hazy than his book? I can't say anything being that he was there and I wasn't BUT there seemed to be a lot of timing inaccuracies. Same thing with the Parrish book I just read. Decent read but definitely a little off on at least the picture datings

Re: Coincidence? (dead-related) |
According to Rock, he was really pissed off about the book because a lot of inaccuracies were in there that he noted to the publisher but they rushed to release same in order to cash in on Jerry's death - his words re the publisher. I can't vouch for accuracy of same. He has done an audio version of same with David Bean's help (NPRS manager; also here in Monterey), and will release a revised version. We're going to have a bunch of his original poster/artwork collection for the show. The only issue is what's for show and what's for sale. We will have for sale the original painting for the cover of Waiting for Columbus (it's very nice - but very expensive). We're also going to have a bunch of Shepard Fairey rock stuff as well as Roger Dean (YES and others) originals.

well I have to say it's amazing he's atill alive to talk about it. That's good news. Is he still on the major outs with the whole family? that's a shame to be there from the beginning then have it end like that. Does he still talk to Rifkin?

Re: Coincidence? (dead-related) |
Actually, he went to the first shoreline show and gave me good reports on Warren. He saw people at that so I think there's some good and bad among various people. I don't probe on that topic, but not exactly an extended crew of folks where anyone can safely throw stones without watching for the return fire...
I knew his stepdaughter, Acacia, and Annabelle Garcia pretty well back in the early 80s [used to buy my Jerry tix from them all the time for shows at the Stone; I'm sure they were comps and they used the funds for "fun"] and his daughter Sage used to work for BGP (she's been an asst to Jagger for many years now). . . so we tend to talk about folks we have in common. I was actually with him and our extended Santa Cruz/Lake Tahoe "family" at those Laguna Seca shows with Los Lobos after he was "out". And we set up "shop" next to Kesey's bus and sold the Griffin "Jerry's Back from the Dead" t-shirts while various pranksters messed with sounds and odds and ends in Oakland for those "come back" shows. Ah, the stories from those nights.....

Acacia: wine, plant or beetle? This is an especially productive genera of legumes...but I doubt this has any bearing on the current topic. Nonetheless, I ask, couldn't you think of a better name than a thorny, invasive plant? Hmmm...

Acacia Spirit Scully - never knew until I googled to confirm and came across this:
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1310&dat=19850628&id=t2gVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=d-EDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6442,7203398
SUre link sucks. Anyway, she and Annabelle told me some bad stories during that time of having to rub Jer's legs so he could get circulation going to get up and stumble to bed. And if 1/10th of what I heard about Crosby was true, hard to believe he is alive. Then again, Keef still has blood (or something) pumping in his veins...

Actually, if I weren't a biologist, "acacia" would be a cool name...although I always thought "hyla" (a genus of treefrogs) was a great name for a girl (and I know one even...girl, not treefrog). But what do I know having had three boys in a row?

That's cool! I expect they knew exactly what they were doing - Hidalgo is a huge Garcia fan.
Do we know why the GD played it the few times in 1987? The movie with Lou Diamond Philips and several songs by The Wolves came out in July of 1987 ...

I assumed it was because of the movie and the popularity of the Los Lobos rendition of the song at that time.

And the feeling was mutual with Garcia being a big fan of him/them. I suspect Jerry did LaBamba based on the huge resurgence of the song at the time. Not only brought him back to the early days of rock that he grew up on plus I think he was excited about the band ( Los Lobos ). At least that's my take on it.

Re: Coincidence? (dead-related) |
they play that sequence a lot Good Lovin>LaBamba. Here's something I find interesting - Jerry was a first generation American, his Dad was born in Spain. I don't think he ever had any ties to his Spanish Heritiage other than the surname so I doubt he could speak Spanish. I wonder if his Dad ever spoke it being it was his first language. Either way I bet he'd have to learn the lyrics like anyone else singing lyrics in a language they don't understand. Kind of ironic no?

Well he kind of butchered them during that 9-18-87 appearance so that makes sense to me. Then again by '87 he was butchering the more familiar ones on occasion as well. I do recall when Jerry did that special with Reuben Blades that was on HBO in the late '80s or early '90s there was a mention about heritage although i wrongly assumed Mexican not Spanish.
As for the the sequence, i don't think I had heard LL do it, however it does not surprise me that they would. It just struck me because of the date. I tend to think of the NFA>Bertha sequences they do.

Well it's like Carlos Mencia said - he's Honduran but when he's in California he's Mexican, When he's in Florida he's Cuban, when he's in New York he's Puerta Rican. When you have Hispanic heritage you come to expect it.
As for that special - Reuben Blades is Panamanian, Santana ( if that's the same one that he was on too ) - Mexican, and Jerry didn't really seem to have any ties imo except as an American although his Dad was born in Spain.
