Man that "new community" is the old community too. Puna and Kalapana have always been certifiably freaky. There were always freaks living in Puna off the grid in geodesic domes, shacks, tee-pees, tents, you name it! See the attached picture for one such place built on top of the lava
I've lived here 30 years and love this place. We have few of the mainland big city problems, little or no violence, murders rarely happen here, there are no gangs or racism or any of those struggles here. The main drawback is that it is expensive to live, since everything has to be shipped over here. I'm happy you enjoyed yourself when you came.
I would bet when you came here in the 70's you camped at Harry Brown Park across from Drain Pipe at the black sand beach in Kalapana, one of my favorite places to camp. Here is a picture taken where I used to camp between the palm trees you see. These picture are from the 1990 eruption in May. As a side note, the Jerry Garcia Band played a show in Hilo two weeks later.
Now you're gonna make me pull out my JGB audience recording of the 5/20/90 Garcia Band show from the Hilo Civic and blast it again for old times sake.... (-:

Hard to believe this is 20 years ago. Yes, I camped at Harry K. Brown many times. My wife and I also camped there on our honeymoon night. Walked down the road to the Kalapana Drive In and sat on the beach drinking wine and eating taro chips. Did you ever swim in the Queen's Bath? Those pics you attached are awesome, particularly the one of the lava eating the park. Utter distruction with a rainbow on top. Truly Hawaii.Thanks.
BTW - I saw the JGB show the week before in the Waikiki Shell. Last time for me.

Hey DH & SD! Outstanding...been following your posts from the sidelines as you were having so much fun catching up on the good ol days (and current, it seems).
Anyhow, totally unrelated trivia, but I caught three giant marine toads at HKBrown Pk in 1970. Loved it there--wasn't able to visit that area again til 2000, exactly 30 yrs later, and found it largely as you have been describing...amazing. Loved going to the Volc House...great brkfast buffet way back when...been over to Maui more frequently the last few yrs, but always loved the big one.

The Queen's Bath was one of my favorite spots. You could go there when mangoes were in season and pick some the size of cantaloupes. The water was clean and VERY cold! What a great spot! One time at Harr\y Brown Park I was camping and one of my daughters had her pet rabbit in a big cage. One day it got loose and we were looking high and low for "Honey Bunny". A few days later I'm driving through the National Park down the road from HK Park and a park ranger turns his lights and siren on and pulls me over and has me follow him back to park HQ. WTF?? Inside his office is our pet rabbit caged like a prisoner and he's writing me a ticket for having an unsupervised rabbit on Nat'l Park land! Freaking hilarious!! I never did pay that ticket!

Ha! They should be giving tickets to the moronic sugar cane farmers that brought marine toads over! Huge problem! Just like Australia...
