I have always heard that Mark VII destroyed every copy of the 50's series they could get their hands on when Dragnet 67 debuted. They didnt want the new show competing with the old series. More eps have come to light in the last 10 yrs. Hopefully many more will surface someday.

But Webb spent a lot of money producing the 1950s show in colour on the theory that a colour series would have a longer syndication life than a black and white series. It seems strange that he would destroy the colour master prints that were never sent out to networks.

Has anyone seen any color prints? Maybe they were not destroyed but they havent seen the light of day. The Dragnet 67 deal paid alot more money to Mark VII than the earlier 50's deal. They were afraid of confusion with the viewers and the 50's series was being shown on late night programming and still quite popular. You could get 16mm films of the episodes as well if you knew where to look and I think that is where most of the episodes we have left come from.
