Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
I came roaming in search of the best late period, say after Touch Of Grey, Garcia tune I might stumble across, and seemingly in search of a good version of Lazy River Road, upon which I am still clamouring to find, I came across this masterpiece of a 1994 Standing On The Moon, which perhaps is Garcia's best song written in his last decade. This version is uptempo and very well recorded. Great vocals for such a late date.
This one from the Spectrum has many fans.
http://www.archive.org/details/gd94-10-05.sbd.unknown.6483.sbeok.shnfSo looking for more suggestions for the last great Garcia tune.
I see a playoff format.
So Many Roads vs.
Day Between
Standing On The Moon vs.
Foolish Heart
Black Muddy River vs.
Lazy River Road
Built To Last vs.
Liberty

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
I don't like SOTM or Foolish Heart so the other line ups bum me out.
I think, ironically given Jerry's final decline, his final songs that WOULD have been on their last album was his best later material
Days between
Lazy River Road
So Many Roads
great songs. Better than the last two albums worth imo

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
Ruben and Cherise was released first on the Cats Under the Stars album. I really can't say that 1978 is Later Era Garcia. I love the song, and personally believe it to be the pinnacle of the JGB studio releases (imho), but certainly not latter era.

hee hee, I never got that album, serves me right. If Althea (from '79) can't be considered, then a '78 number REALLY can't. I just knew of the later, live versions of R + C. Thanks for the info...

Standing On the Moon
So Many Roads
Built To Last
Muddy River vs Lazy River is just not fair. If I had to choose Black Muddy River.(A person I was talkin to at work was telling me her reaction to this song and she is not a head...Bruce Hornsby brings people together.)

cant consider seriously any of the others; they r all just nice songs, the contest being totally out of context in their case

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
Well "later", anyway.
Personally, I am underwhelmed by most of the "new tunes" of the '80s and '90s.
I'm not trying to bash them, it's just not my thing.I could never find myself getting excited by any of those songs when I saw them.I have to admit I did like Victim a bit at first, but it was killed by over-play.
But that's just my opinion.

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
agree about victim. the song has its merits, but i never liked it as a second set staple (or opener especially). if they would have busted it out every once in a while it would have been fine. there were also very few other "new" bob tunes that i could stomach very well. victim was a least a pretty cool jam.
as for the new jerry songs, they were never my favorites either. i wanted more ruben and cherise, and less of the road/river songs of later years.

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
I'm going to ignore the match-ups as you've listed them and just put them in order of personal preference...
1. Foolish Heart - by far the best jam of these songs. it's not even close, imho
2. Standing on the Moon - jerry always seemed to nail this song.
3. Lazy River Road - i like the structure of this song. folksy.
4. Liberty - am i the only one who likes this song? the encored with this at one show i saw in '93, and i loved it. i put it in the same category with althea. hints of deep elem blues in the main riff.
5. Black Muddy - nice enough, but never really grabbed me. the last tune that jerry sang lead vocals on.
6. So Many Roads - people like this for the vocal crescendo. i always found it kinda boring.
7. Built to Last - meh.
8. Days Between - i'm really not a fan of this tune. if someone wants to suggest a nice version of it, i'm all ears.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd94-12-19.sbd.vernon.20712.sbeok.shnf12/19/94 Sports Arena, Los Angeles - Pure magic. I was at the show with my wife, she remarked to me that she thought Jerry was dying on stage as he sung the song. (I've posted about this before)
Of course, nobody knew there was about 7 months left. Funny how every time I hear this version of the song, the wind blows dust into my contacts........

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
Good call on this Standing On The Moon - I always wanted to like this song but good versions are very hard to find.
In terms of late-period Garcia, I personally favor So Many Roads and Lazy River Road. I'd love to hear a great Days Between if anyone knows of one ...

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
You're welcome! I've listened to quite a few versions and that remains my favorite. I prefer "Days Between" with more guitars and less keyboards, and the vocals are pretty on, considering the lateness of the gig. This version seems to have an 'epic' feel, kind of like Ennio Morricone...or at least Gabor Szabo. ;)

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
Thanks again for this recommendation. I don't delve too often into the 90's, and when I do it is usually only for the specific songs that you can't get anywhere else, but last night I had a bunch of last-minute Xmas cards to write so I streamed this whole show. Is it 1973 or 1981? No, but it's pretty darned good on its own terms.
When I plugged in my ipod to go for a walk this morning, the first thing that popped out was the Days Between from 03/21/93 at the Omni - I also recommed this one if you don't know it, though it may be a litle heavier on the keys than you like.
Happy holidays.

For me it's a tie between Foolish Heart (saw DSO do a splendid version of this one recently and I was converted on the spot) and SOTM, which, as it was said above, Jerry always seemed to nail.

Re: Garcia's Best Late-Period Song |
As to later era Garcia, for me it was always the Solo stuff. Does anything really compare to Arabia? 1991!
Standing on the Moon was vocally beautiful. Jerry put his empathy and pathos into this moreso than well, most of the latter stuff.
