Anyone up for a forum history lesson? |
Seems these days there are a lot of new faces around here. This of course is a good thing, however there are often growing pains associated with having so many new voices and opinions. So I thought it might be fun and possibly informative if we all posted a link to our own first threads. When someone new shows up they have to "expose" themselves to a crowd but they never really see what it was like when we were all newbies here. So lets see how everyone first said "hello" here. I am sure the threads will bring back names from the past and might even remind many of us of what we knew and didn't know when we got here.

This forum started about 3 years ago so for many people their first posts were actually at the LMA (etree) forum. In Nov. 2005 they briefly pulled access to all the Grateful Dead at the request of the band and the forum at LMA exploded. The band compromised resulting in the current policies here at the archive regarding what can be downloaded and what can only be streamed. However because of the amount of music and the sheer volume of posts at the LMA forum they separated the Grateful Dead from the rest of the LMA.
You might also notice a few name changes along the way. I'm talking to you SDH....
I hope that everyone can find their first post, it should not be a problem for most. I am concerned about our friend direwolf0701. I believe he started posting during the times of the great pharaohs of Egypt and we will require some help translating his gibberish. Perhaps rob or snori could head to the British Museum and transmit from the Rosetta Stone. I believe admissions is still free.

Here's mine that I posted on a quest to find a Friend of the Devil that I heard on Sirius, mistakenly thinking that it was Dylan and the Dead when it was just Dylan. I still haven't heard it again but it was really neat (I thought) to hear Dylan's unusual voice singing it. The rec I got in response is still a pretty neat version. Thanks everybody for sharing your GD knowledge with me over this past year!

Hey, the whole name change thing was a surprise to me. When I briefly changed over to "SDH20" I was not expecting many of my older posts getting changed over to that poster name. Now, I first came on here with the name "LehighVet88", and my original posts, as I recall, were simple ones about certain AUD's not working for DWNLD, and absolutely no mention of cow-love, Donna cat torture or 1979 Matrix's. That would come later.

Ready: take one part Dire, a smidge of NC, three sprinkles of Kochman, then two dashes of PP, but a whole jar of "recent Rob" (warning! do not, under any circumstances, use "early Rob"! this will destroy your receipe!).
Place in blender.
Turn on high.
Leave on high.
Take off top.
Put face in jar to check progress when blades jam.
Call 911.
There, you should be ready.

I suppose it is true that my heartless cynicism, at times, can pale before yours. When mine begins to be a bit out of line, Madame Wolf does have a tendency to yank the choke collar to make me heel (which of course is just the reaction i am looking for in my immature attention-getting ways.)

I frist downloaded recordings in late-2003/early-2004. I think it was before the Grateful Dead shows were here. I believe the first was a Cowboy Junkies show...?
Glad this place is still around (and growing). I still don't post a lot, but lurking does give me some guiltless entertainment everyday. Sometimes I don't get the animosity displayed at times, but I guess this place is no different than the rest of the world.

I love '70s bands, '80s bands other stuff that takes off from where the Dead began.
I totally divorce the post '71 GD from my mind when I'm enjoying their 1st 5 years, and my enjoyment isn't colored or dampened by all the changes to their sound that happened after 1970 with the Dead.
I do enjoy The Wheel, Scarlett Begonias, Touch Of Gray and various highlights from their later years but
that primitive, less progressive, decidedly unmellow noise they initially made is to me, the Grateful Dead...
it has so much zing, zap, that I don't get from their later stuff -
of course, freak-outs from the '80s such as The Raven, I can appreciate -
but a steady diet of '70s/'80s/'90s GD?

I was very much against seperating us from the general LMA populace.
Maybe it worked out for the best tho.
At first I thought it would kill the cross pollenisation.
But it seems there's just as wide a gap between WT and my taste for primal GD, and that of the many preferences other Dead heads posting here have
- and the twain may meet - that in itself is some sort of cross pollenization, just not as wide screened as I'd hoped.
I never wanted to be stuck in a Dead zone, strictly GD-centric forum.
You'll forgive my snobbery I hope, as we can share the women, we can share the wine...
except we'll have to share yours, cause I've already shared all of mine with me, myself and I...

Great stuff--nothing to be embarrassed about in that. I recall reading it when researching the "Nov debacle" after arriving here in 06...
And, this whole "history" lesson was great; I had recalled SDH's roll call while doing mine the other day, but couldn't find it given his NAME CHANGES, but then when I went "back" for mine, I saw my response, tracked it down, and the rest is (recent) history...
Fun stuff...pathetic, but there you have it!

That Warehouse show is one of my top ten ever favorite Dead shows....Band Busted, Phil's Amp Busted...and they still play an awesome show, particularly the acoustic numbers and the Dire Wolf already mentioned...

hey BD, Little Feat came up here years ago ( no Lowell of course ) and I said WTF? It was a dry concert season ( as usual ) so I thought, well It'll be a lame shell but will probably not be too bad. Boy was I wrong. They KILLED it man. Threw it down and shredded. Excellent show.

I saw them several times right after they came back, twice with Bonnie sitting in, and they were great each time. I also really enjoyed Phil and Friends with Paul Barrerre and Billy Payne in the line up that I saw at Shoreline. That said, haven't gone out of my way to see them since - but kudos to them for still getting at it.
Wilco has newer show up in their roadcase section of their website. Now on the road opening for Neil - would like to see some of those collaborations.

Great link! I only got to see them once, in Nov 2003. About the second song of the set a security guard grabs me, shines a light in my face and tries to eject me. Turns out the guy next to me was smoking a joint. The guy tells security he was the guilty one and they kicked him out. Bummer. Little Feat wrote a tour diary in Relix about these shows and the nazi security tactics that were deployed directed at pot smokers. It turned out that some of the bands friends were kicked out too, people who were supposed to show them around the island. The band put on a great show in spite of this, even jamming Dark Star and playing Tennessee Jed as part of a Dixie Chicken sandwich.

Saw them twice right after they regrouped. The first time was in a place called the Boat House down in the Tidewater area (can't remember if it was Norfolk or Hampton) which was kind of like seeing them in a really big bar. The second time around Let It Roll had really taken off and they were playing at The Mosque. Both were great shows.

Here's mine from 12/20/04
Just bought a memorex external cd=rw with Nero 6 Ultra software. Had to upgrade my Windows98 to xp. Have tried unsuccessfully for like two days to burn a cd. Yes, I am computer illiterate, so please bare with my beginners questions- trying to download and burn a Grateful Dead show (7/2/88). Choices include lossless, hi-fi and lo-fi (i won't even ask about P2P). Tried saving it to My Music, but it doesn't show up there. I think I've tried all 3 versions. When I do find it on the hard drive, I can't add it to the Nero software. The one time it happened and I went thru the burn steps, nothing was on the cd after burning. Do I need some type of file converter- all the files are either mp3 zip or shn/shnf. Can someone with patience and knowledge help this old deadhead download shows from his past? Thank you forever in advance.
