Re: Garcia movie goes forward - Hollywood Reporter |
That totally explains why they are focussing only on the early years. They may have a lot of trouble finding financing for a Garcia movie that can't mention the Grateful Dead. But I also think that, in many ways, it would be a more interesting movie - at least to me.
GDM or GDP, or whatever it is they call themselves these days, are actively shopping a GD biopic in Hollywood. If that movie ever comes together it will probably kill this one anyway.

Maybe not. A friendly treatment could provide a lot of insight into the later periods anyway. A friend of mine sometimes drops some interesting facts from his earlier life and marriages, which is fun.
For those who psychologize or even idolize it could be good, and I already want to see the screenplay.

Re: Garcia movie goes forward - Hollywood Reporter |
I think they could do a Jerry biopic justice, but it would have to be handled by talented directors, script writers and actors w/the blessings of the surviving band members, and that appears unlikely. Any kind of "E Hollywood True Story" approach would be such a crying shame.
I tell you who might do a nice job as "early Jerry"....Emile Hirsch, who played Christopher McCandless in "Into the Wild"...talented actor who evokes that freewheeling independent-minded spirit that made Jerry who he was.
If I had to think beyond that into latter-day Jerry as he got into his bad-health territory...imagine how Philip Seymour Hoffman would do decked out in full grey beard and spectacles....! There's an actor who could really do Jerry justice if he dedicated himself to the role.

Interesting choices...
I would think some no name would get the role(s).

Yeah, Seymour-Hoffman especially would be a long shot...and maybe it would be best if an unknown did it. I'll be real surprised, though, if this ever really gets off the ground and onto a screen.

Re: Garcia movie goes forward - Hollywood Reporter |
I've been hoping for a couple years now that it would be Hoffman - there aren't that many actors who could 'get' JG's enormous wit, intelligence, and harder-to-spot ego - but I don't think he could work for the early years. Emile Hirsch is an excellent candidate.
What I meant about a potential GD flick killing this one is that, from a financing point of view, investors are less likely to support a non-GD Jerry film if a GD Jerry film is being made at the same time. The GD one would have a much larger interest level from the general public, and a much easier time finding money.

No question...a non-GD related project would be a really tough sell.
In a related topic, I've heard of a documentary about the Dead Heads themselves that came out some years ago...maybe while Jerry was even still alive...but i heard it wasn't very good (real shame--a great doc. could and should have been done on "the scene")...does anyone recall what that is and whether it's worth seeing?

Re: Garcia movie goes forward - Hollywood Reporter |
As disappointing as this movie is, it doesn't even hold a candle to The End of the Road: The Final Tour '95, which is mostly incoherent interviews with incoherent "tour-heads" and uses Merl Saunder's Rain Forest record, with Jerry on guitar, as its soundtrack. Really, really, don't bother ...
