OBX Marathon 11/9/08 - Dead on the iPod |
26.2 miles is tough. not too bad with a 35+ minute Dark Star and a 45 minute Playin' in your ipod.
I hit the wall hard at 21.4 miles (okay, the wall hit me hard at 21.4). Still had the Washington Baum bridge over the Roanoke Channel to manteo Island in front of me - 96 feet high over a 3/4 mile grade - might not seem like much until you are running it.
At that point I kicked in Scarlet-Fire from 5/8/77. Perfect tempo to get back on pace. Somewhere during the B bridge and the wall started to crumble. Finished strong (relatively speaking since I don't weigh 126 pounds and am not Kenyan) and clocked a PR at 4:42. Thighs hurt like crap today but nothing a couple of vicodin and scotch won't take care of.
Any other runners out there load up their ipods with the Dead?
What other stuff do you listen to when running?
Be Well.

Re: OBX Marathon 11/9/08 - Dead on the iPod |
I hit the wall just reading this post, sorry no marathons for me but congrats to you for your PR. I do recall that driving over the bridge to Manteo provided a lovely view.
I tend to use the elliptical more than running these days so the pace is a bit different. I really like One From the Vault while on the machine. Also the Shakedown>Franklin's from the Alligator alley show (11-29-80) is pretty cool. I did write a post about Dark Star and endorphins once. Although I wasn't sure how DS would go with physical activity i found that they went pretty well as long as you didn't start out with them.

I'll take your word for it on the view. I honestly don't remember much of anything except for one thing - there was a boat coming out the channel, looked to be a 24 footer, he was planed up and going pretty fast. I distinctly remember the sharp white wake contrasting against the grey-green water as he turned to follow the channel.
The image is etched in my mind's eye.
Can't wait to run it again next year.

All my running and biking is done with Dead and various others....amazing how certain songs at just the right time pulled me through several periods when I was ready to call it quits......Franklins and Fire On The MT great motivators....I remember listening to Truckin> Epilogue>Prelude>Morning Dew from Europe 72 during a sunrise run along Lake Erie that had me feel like my feet were not touching the ground.....

That's nice you get to use headphones in the OBX.
Races around here won't let you use i-pods. So people train with headphones which is when they are actually in danger of being hit by a car and then when they are racing on a closed course and danger is at its minimum headphones are banned. Go figure.
Congratulations.

on the Bay Area races I've been to, you can wear headphones but you will not be counted as a legal finisher. Some moron with a lawyer messed it all up-go figure! Finishing a marathon in less than 5hrs is good. A bit over 11min/mi avg for +26miles is a grate accomplishment. My legs are sore just thinking about it!

6-9-76 St. Stephen on. Biking though, not running, so be careful!
