Just have to add on that the Estimated transition jam is absolutely gorgeous. Amazing stuff. If nothing else, just check out the Estimated/Eyes. Worth your time.

Re: Today's Today |
Great stuff - excellent recommendation, as usual. I share your enthusiasm for the early 80's - the best shows I saw were almost all in 1981-82 (plus a few fall 79). UJB out of space is always a favorite. I believe that you are already familiar with another classic that features that same configuration:

Re: Today's Today |
listening to this just now--Great show! But check out the Glassberg FOB version--
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1982-04-17.fob.nak700.glassberg.78747.sbeok.flac16I think the sound is better than the SBD, which is clear but kinda sterile in comparison. This FOB has very strong ocal pick-up on Jerry & little crowd noise during songs...just enuff to actually enhance the feel of excitement in the house that night.
Real good early 80's show & no surprise given that 2 nights later in baltimore they played what may have been a Top 10 all-timer ("Ravenspace", Killer Stella, Franklin's, etc....)
This show is a great run-up to that one & well worth a DL.

Re: Today's Today |
You are excactly right - I think the glassberg is what I actually have in my ipod, but I picked the SB this morning off the archive because I was in a bit of hurry. 04/17 features my all-time favorite Baby Blue. Growling Jerry!
I suspect you are already familiar with it, but if not check out also 04/18 in Hartford - not as solid an all-around show as 04/17 (imho, of course) but it has it's moments, including Phil's SF Earthquake space. Weird that 04/18 and 04/19 were the only times he did that. I don't know, maybe it was the nitrous ...

Re: Today's Today |
Now I'm going to hear "nitrous" substituted for "Roses" every time I hear jerry do that line ;-)
Will have to check out 4/18...I have no idea how this one eluded me til now, (maybe by inclination to not give AUDs a close enuff listen (i've been hurt so many times before)... so thanks for bringing it to my attention.
April of '82 has some real gems, it seems.
*forgot to mention...one HELL of a beatiful "Birdsong" in 4-17-82 in set One. Jerry really changed that tune in the early 80's....not nec. better than the gorgeous, floating, dreamlike Birds of the early 70's...but with some very intricate space/jazz free-form riffs in the middle section instead that are so interesting and all quite different in their own way show to show. '81 and'82 saw a strong re-birth of Birdsong...which entered even a 3rd incarnation in the 90's with the Branford versions.

Re: Today's Today |
Actually listening to this now, I think it's a serious remaster of the previous glassberg. Great stuff. Historical footnote: 04/18/82 is the 75th anniversary of the great SF earthquake, a fact we didn't learn until a few weeks after this show. We just thought Phil had lost his mind. And, yes that is a lovely Bird Song.
And as long as we're pushing the early 80's, I never miss a chance to plug my all-time favorite show. Great Bird Song, unbelievable China Cat-Rider. It's all top-flight. There is a lovely Charlie Miller SB
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1981-03-09.sbd.miller.74220.sbeok.flac16But on this one I actually prefer the gorgeous MOTB (Glassberg again!):

Re: Today's Today |
is that glassberg or Miller update new? I've seen this show mentioned by many as an all timer, and I've always thought the available sources maybe weren't bringing me the optimal sound to "get" what everyone else was getting...
which is to say I've always thought of it as a "good" show but not a "great" one...given you say it's your all time fave (and any time a poster here sez a show is a #1 i make sure to give it a good hard listen, b/s it;s bound to be at least excellent...) i will have to try one of these sources again....5/1/81 and 9/25/81 are also in of my top 10 shows...great year all around, '81.

Re: Today's Today |
They're both relatively new - since they started putting up new ones again in the last several months. I think Charlie's board is a lot better than the previous Betty board, and as far as I can remember the MOTB Glassberg replaced another, hugely inferior audience recording.
PS someone recommended a new aud of 05/01/1981 just a week or so ago, and I've listened to a lot since. Great show. I have no doubt that my preference for 03/09/81 is ll about having been there. Aaah, memories . . . MSG was completely and utterly silent during parts of Stella Blue, and I had never seen anything like that before in my life (and rarely since). Peace out, brother. I clock out soon ...

Re: Today's Today |
PS 9/25 and 9/26 are another two I was lucky enough to be at - great shows both, and very different from each other. Do you know a good source for 09/25? I have Charlie Miller's board (which he notes was the best he could do with a horrible recording) and a slightly shrill audience, but I don't have one that I like.
What I remember best about 09/25 were the break-outs (at least on that tour - I don't think this was the first show they played them, though I could be wrong) Might as Well and Cumberland Blues, and a great Fire on the Mountain. Then there was that crazy 400 mile drive from Lehigh to Buffalo ...

Re: Today's Today |
Wow--VERY jealous you saw the Lehigh show....long one of my favorites.
Far as I know, there really is no good source existing of that show. Just one of those unfortunates we have to live with.
In a thread recently about "wish" upgrades for sound I listed that 9/25/81 right behind 4/3/82 as shows I wish could magically appear with upgraded sound.
Will def. check out the new Miller SBD you mentioned for 3/9/81. So rare for an East coast audience to stay quiet during Stella...that musta been nice!
