I just bought some 78s from the 20's. Are they OK to upload? |
I don't know when they are from, just that they come from before the 30's. Some of the recording are from countries with 50-year copyright terms for music, and were never released in the US. Are they OK to upload?

But with 50's TV I can actually find out whether they are copyrighted or not. To find out info on American 78s means going to Washington DC, and I don't even live in America.

Hmmm, that website doesn't help with anything from before 1978, I don't think.
What are the alternatives available for those of us who can't travel to D.C.? For example, there's a rare 78 on Ebay right now that I'm thinking about buying. As far as I know, it's never been reissued since it was recorded in the late 1940s -- certainly, I can't find any references on the web or on Worldcat. The record label it was released on is long defunct, so I'm guessing that renewals (if applicable to sound recordings?) were never filed; in addition, the original label appears to have no copyright notice on it. If I knew that I could upload this safely to the Archive, I'd buy it for sure!
