Over 69,000 Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions titles digitized
University of Alberta Libraries in partnership with the Canadian Research Knowledge Network, Canadiana.org, Internet Archive, and Internet Archive Canada have been digitizing microfilmed materials as originally gathered and produced by the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM). Thus far, over 69,000 titles have been digitized which amounts to approximately 11,000,000 pages. This CIHM Digital Archives begins with pre-1900 non-serial materials and continues forward to 1920. It is a collection of publications dating back to the early 17th century that are about Canada, or written and published by Canadians. This five year mass digitization project will, at its conclusion in 2013, make the CIHM collection available online, for free, to all people. The collection complements the materials digitized and made available through Early Canadiana Online and Canadiana.org

The Katchewanooka Herald

Internet Archive Canada is extremely proud to announce the digitization of our 400,000 text. We would like to thank all of the wonderful donors from the Ontario Council of University Libraries and other institutions. These organizations have supplied us with rich and wonderful items in relation to our unique Canadian History.

The Katchewanooka Herald was Generously loaned to IAC by Trent University Archives.

"A single copy of The Katchewanooka Herald was handwritten on both sides of foolscap paper and was passed from pupil to pupil, home to home throughout “The Clearing”. Eventually, the original copy was returned to the writer, editor and publisher who was usually one or two persons.
Narrated and dramatized entertaining, humorous and fascinating handpicked excerpts from The Herald which provided a deeper level of understanding of village life in the 1800s.

Excerpts highlighted included comments from George M. Douglas, observations of changes in the clearing, an early attempt at women’s liberation, a birth announcement, a visit from absentee landlords (First Nations), early tobacco wars in the clearing, a community ‘bee’ to erect a dwelling, risking life and limb to protect the home, the grand opening of the first mill and the celebration of the Queen’s birthday.
