Robert F. Heinecken was born on Oct. 29, 1931 in Denver, Colo. He received his B.A. (1951) and M.A. (1959) in Art from UCLA. He was an instructor in the Dept. of Art, UCLA, from 1960-1990 and was honored as professor emeritus in 1991. His work has been exhibited in galleries across the country, including a touring exhibition that originated at George Eastman House, and in West Germany, Tokyo, and Taipei
Heinecken discusses his early years and continues on through his stint as a jet fighter pilot in the Marine Corps, his education at UCLA and his eventual professorship there, and his career as a photographic artist of international acclaim. Major topics covered include the status of photography as an artistic discipline in both the world and academia, the development of UCLA's College of Fine Arts, pushing the boundaries of the photographic medium, Heinecken's work and methodology, the Society for Photographic Education, and the contemporary art world in Los Angeles
