Subject:
Medicine Man for your Blues
Have to admit that for the time period, he was one of the finest band leaders. He carried many people through the great depression & gave a smile to all. His music speaks to the heart of the pain & hope of the great depression, that's history, and should belong to the people of the Earth. Listen to his "Buy American" - exactly like today' front page news, homeless & starving people while people send music tracks they shouldn't own to China to be made into CDs.
I note that one asks about copyright, it should have long ago gone into the Public Domain. Problem is that some "entertainment" companies have taken to digitalizing very old music and then claim that creation as having copyright & try to make as broad a sweep as possible, even claiming the original as part of their work. In my opinion that act is very close to being a crime & I am sure eventually there will be a class action suit against these companies. I take most of my digital recordings off the original vinyl records and then I lay down tracks, some high notes and some low, voice, various musical instruments, and so on till I have about 16 tracks. All are time phased so the music is perfect, of course I get rid of scratch n bloop noises. Then I bring the song back together track by track being mindful to emphasize the different musical instruments and voices on different compositions so the song sounds like the best stereo music of today, and on some songs I bring it into the 21st century by adding special effects and synthesized computer effects that are triggered by the music.
I added 1 such copy of Ted Lewis doing "Medicine Man for your Blues" (1929) and added that to a private video of my creation and put it on Youtube. In under 15 minutes I had a take down notice & warning of copyright infringement. These giant entertainment companies are going too far. When I think of how little cash Lewis got for performing his works, not to mention he rarely personally even tried to get a copyright, he even partly financed some of his earliest records, which included many of these songs. I'd hate to go out Christmas caroling due to fear of the sound police. Someone needs to fight back against these thieves that run music mills. These songs will soon be 100 years old. Copywrong is more like it.
Reminds me of when Janis Joplin was playing at Woodstock, and asked if everyone had enough water and went on to about what music was all about, in her words it was; "about Groovin" and not tearing people down, she specifically spoke out about the promoters . The same promoters that have made money ever since she died. Anyone claiming copyrights on Ted Lewis' music is just exposing how depraved the music industry has become.

Much Good Music / Much Bad Clarinet
One of the reviewers notes the heroic nature of this collection, and let's agree that this collection is valuable. It takes an enthusiast, and a site like archive for there to be a complete collection on a rather forgotten figure in music.
But the recordings themselves (well remastered, in most cases) do tell us why Lewis is obscure. When it comes to jazz, Lewis has a pretty good band, but plays a terrible clarinet and an even worse alto sax. On the records where those instruments predominate, things can get painful.
The band itself, though, plays jazz well -- and can surprise, even when the personnel is not amplified with guest stars like Fats Waller and Benny Goodman. And Lewis' vocal performances, which are melancholy talk vocals backed by a very sweet sound from the orchestra, can be quite effective. (See "She's Funny That Way"). But not every number is good, and the early ones featuring Lewis playing a schmaltz alto sax, have the musical appeal of a yodeling cat in heat.
