July 2, 2012 Subject:
But what exactly did Ozzie do for a living, anyway?
When this episode aired, there was little to suggest that ABC would survive longer than a few more years, and it seemed more likely DuMont would survive. A few days later (February 9), after the merger between ABC and UPT was approved, ABC was the one likely to survive and DuMont was heading towards oblivion.
What would have been better would have been merger between the networks, creating a stonger network with the best assets of each. Both networks thought this would a good idea, but Paramount Pictures, who owned a stake in DuMont, vetoed the merger.
So.....DuMont was gone by August 1956, and ABC struggled during the 1950s, 1960s, and to some extent to the early 1970s.
(I noticed that much of this episode consists of the lights turned off. Whether this was for budget reasons, I don't know)
